Hi Steve - lovely photos ... thanx for posting. Wonder if we'd have a prayer of finding a site when we are in SoCal during July. Happy camping, L 'n d

Thanks for the comments on the photos. Tough question on campsite availability in July. But it's my understanding that it's a cinch if you arrive during the week. That's what we did even though most if not all of the sites were taken by the weekend. At least half of the sites at Laguna are walk-in and if you get there during the week you're set for the weekend too. Check the online reservation system and you'll find that even the reserved sites are available during the week but booked well in advance for the weekend. Hope this answers your question.
A few comments about camping in Mount Laguna ...
There are two campgrounds in the area that are offered by the Forest Service. Actually, they are run by concessionaires. Laguna is the campground shown in my pictures. Another one south along the Sunrise Hwy. is called Burnt Rancheria. The later is newer with more up to date facilities but I found Laguna to be more attractive.
There are plenty of hiking trails nearby. Most are easily accessible from the campground(s). The Pacific Crest Trail even runs through the area.
There is a small general store between the two campgrounds. There are also two restaurants nearby but are only open Friday night and Saturday.
Just north of the general store there is a very nice picnic area with views that overlook the Borrego State Park (desert) to the east. It's a sharp contrast between the green forest at about 6000 feet in elevation and the desert, which is near sea level.
