can any of you Ham's identify this antenna here on a ship? What type is it? and does the cone mesh have anything to the antenna, or is it simply to separate the top and bottom ring?

It has nothing to do with ham radio, read the last two lines of the second paragraph.

A vessel when engaged in trawling, by which is meant the dragging through the water of a dredge net or other apparatus used as a fishing appliance, shall exhibit:
  1. two all-round lights in a vertical line, the upper being green and the lower white, or a shape consisting of two cones with their apexes together in a vertical line one above the other;

I changed my call sign from KE7TIV to AK7EE.

Anne also has her call Tech and is studying for General. Call sign KE7VUV.

KJ4GZI just upgraded to General last month.

All I need now is an Egg and a HF transceiver and I will be all set.

I just went hiking/tent camping with someone who brought a handheld HAM. No I'm thinking about getting into it.

Anyone have suggestions for a simple, basic antenna set up I can attach to the tongue area? Just a simple pipe welded on I could then drop a pole into.

Is there any sort of standards for antenna pole sizes? Ideally I'd like some sort of array with the ability to swap in/out various antenna, cellular, HDTV, HAM, etc.

Also tips for running antenna cables from inside to the exterior?

I worked several Cdn Military rigs but not for many years. Most notable was VE8RCS out of Alert. That's about 2.5 hours flying time NNW out of Thule. It was our main link to the outside world and family via 'phone patch but satelites and technology have likely replaced it today.

I suggest you check out the website American Radio Relay League | ARRL - The national association for AMATEUR RADIO. This is a very informative site for potential ham radio operators. Locate an amateur radio club close to you study to pass the exam to get a license. Some ham radio clubs offer classes and exam sessions. Once you are licensed and affiliated with some other operators, you will find plenty of answers to your questions. Everyone has a different technique for antennas. I have a quarter wave magnet mount vertical that I use for 2 meter vhf frequencies. The mag mount antenna is on my tow vehicle and radio mounted inside it. Good luck in your quest to become an amateur radio operator.
