Heat Wave

We went from freezing to tropical heat wave. 95 here in NE Iowa with storms moving in north of us. Because of the long winter we have been kind to our birds extending the feeding time. We now have a good crop of Goldfinches and an Oriole showed up. Got the garden "deer and chicken proofed". I have to give the chickens credit. They did some raking I was not able to do this year with my cast and over extended husband. Don't get the fiddles out.

Hopefully the warm weather will make its way east! We're on the tail end of the cold air now, supposed to warm up now. Monday I never took the row covers off the garden, not too much above ground right now anyway. Haven't talked to the orchard folks to see if anything was lost. Last year the hard freeze after 80* weather killed more than 75% of the apples.

A few weeks ago, I was cutting wood at the farm and saw something out of the corner of my eye, there was a thornapple that looked like it had blueberries all over it. It was at least 30 bluebirds! Watched them for a while till they flew off, never seen that many in one spot, so I guess all the houses people put out are paying off. My screech owls are back, love listening to them.

Haven't seen any orioles yet, nor any scarlet tanagers. Birds have made a huge comeback here, almost common to see bald eagles along the river.

Had tomato plants and other veg starts out since 7 May and then we get this nitetime temp dip forecast so I folded fish wrap and taped around the cages and over the first hoop because starts were too big for paper hats or milk jugs. Got down to 41F. And wind was nasty. Light frost reported about 12 mi. Noth in Chadds Ford PA. but we escaped and couple rows of shell beans up by yesterday morning.

On the news today they are doing the "Solar Flare Scare" again.
Supposed to happen this Sunday. So maybe all that white stuff
will get scorched off the ground.

72 and sunny now! Tomorrow is slated for driveway re-shuffling so I can get the Scamp home this weekend.
