Height allowances for overpasses, etc.

Where do I look to find the height allowances for overpasses on roads? Is there a source for that? I am guessing the Interstate Highway system has a set, regulated height minimum, but what do you do for secondary roads?

I believe the standard minimum height is set at 13'6". But older roads etc may not be set at that height and we're built before standards were set.

Thats just for interstate freeways - set at the height a 'standard' tractor-trailer needs to clear.
Smaller roads are random....

...as a long time trucker, I can tell you all hiways used for interstate transport are supposed to have 15' of clearance...not all do...there are apps that will tell you this...there are trucker atlases with this info and there are dedicated low clearance atlases available at truckstops.....

Thanks so much! I was hoping there would be something like the "dedicated low clearance atlases" you mentioned! Truck stops are treasure troves!

...keep in mind, even with dedicated low clearance books, the occasional overpass may be missed...always use caution and sound judgement...mj

Having driven a Sprinter for years, I am aware of clearances. In my case, it is garages and canopies.

5th wheels and motor homes are taller, but when would an egg be over 10 feet tall? At that height or less, I think your only concern is the canopy at McDonalds. Am I wrong here?

Do some folks carry bikes on egg's roofs? I would think not.

When I was taking my drivers test for a comercial license, my co-workers warned me to pay attention to the overhead clearance signs at all bridges, and overpasses. Get an accurate measure of the height of your rig, and put a sticker on your dash, to remind yourself to watch the signs.

Just down the street a couple miles from the Ryder shop I worked in was a low clearance railroad overpass. We had a few customers destroy trucks there, along with other company's trucks. There was a blinking warning light there and signs stating what the clearance was but it still got hit fairly regularly. There are a few you tube videos taken at low bridges (clearly marked for height) showing trucks and campers hitting the bridge. A few campers had the A/C unit ripped right off.
