Hi,
Highway 1, that beautiful twisty coastal highway, is closed south of Monterey in a part of the Big Sur area known as Devil's Slide. It sounds like it may be closed for several months.

Just FYI if you are planning trip in that area.

Unhappy

I hope they have it re-opened by July. I was planning to use that route to go to the Oregon Gathering.

Aint the internet great. Here's a link that you can use to keep up to date on the conditions on California 1. CA 1 condition

You'll have to enter 1 in the highway number(s) field.

Also, when you are on the road in California and want to check a highway, just dial 1-800-427-7623 and say the highway number.

I checked the Internet because we wanted to take a quick trip up there. That particular area has been a real problem area in the past when there is a lot of rain.

Frederick, I hope it is fixed for you by July!

When we lived in Half Moon Bay, CA the area north of us on Hwy 1 between HMB and San Francisco was also known as Devil's Slide.

The devil is a busy guy!

Hope Hiway One can be opened again soon. A great trip, something for everybody! I went there last October--it had been a while.

California has many duplications of place names, too many Dry Creeks and Fish Creeks. There is even another Squaw Valley (east of Fresno) besides the 1960 Winter Olympics site. The Devil got the lion's share.

I looked this up and it appears to be the Devil's Slide up SF way, not Big Sur: http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/roadinfo/

That is weird. Yesterday, the same site showed the closure in the CENTRAL area by Lucia, and I verified it by phone---same report. I was only interested because we might head up that way.

Today, it shows it is near Half Moon Bay and I checked a local newspaper up there, and sure enough, it is the Devil's slide up north -- pictures and all

I guess even Cal-Trans can get the info wrong at times--- It sounds like someone assumed it was the other Devil's slide.

Thanks for checking again

Had to - heading that way soon! But that was a screw up, now I'll have to check every day to see if it flops back south again!

Here is the link to the local newspaper--today-- with a picture and the "real" story.

On the other hand, I will also keep checking---with all the rain up there, Highway 1 in many areas can be very unstable!!!

Diane,

Your original report that Hwy 1 was closed along the Big Sur coast was correct, but apparently they were able to fix the problem fairly quickly. Here's the local newspaper's report on some of the problems central California's facing due to all the rain they've had. Thanks for the road closure alert!

Yeap, that's right there was a small closure south of Big Sur but the big one that will have Highway 1 closed for a month or so is at Pacifica near SF.

However, if you are planning on going up or down Highway 1 from Monterey to Morro Bay, it would be a good idea to check with the roads folks first. With rain like we've had the potential for slides is very great.

Slides close Highway 1 again
Rock slide forces closure below Big Sur
Monterey County Herald

Three days after state Transportation Department officials cleared the rubble from Highway 1 south of Big Sur, the highway was closed again Monday because of more rock slides.

Caltrans officials said Monday that rocks and mud started cascading down the hillside overnight, forcing the closure from Limekiln to Lucia north of the San Luis Obispo County line. The closure will continue until the debris is cleared and the roadway is safe, said Susana Cruz, spokeswoman for Caltrans' district office in San Luis Obispo.

The roadway had been closed last week for several days because of slides, but Caltrans reopened the highway in time for weekend traffic.

Motorists from Monterey can travel south by taking Monterey-Salinas Highway to Highway 101. Businesses are open north to Ragged Point and south to the Big Sur area.

For updates, call Caltrans at (800) 427-7623.

Highway 1 reopens again
Kathe Tanner
ktanner@thetribunenews.com

Highway 1 south of Big Sur is open again — for now. Caltrans reopened the highway about 3 p.m. today, after clearing debris from recent rock and mudslides.

Motorists may encounter short delays as cleanup work continues from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

Recent rain-triggered slides had blocked the highway Monday morning from the Limekiln area to Lucia.

The highway also was closed for a time last week after a large boulder fell in one location and a mudslide stopped traffic in another spot. Caltrans reopened the road from Friday afternoon to mid-morning Monday.

When the coastal highway is closed, northbound motorists must head inland on Highway 46 to 101 in Paso Robles and southbound motorists detour on Highway 68 off the Monterey peninsula to Highway 101 in Salinas.

Caltrans provides recorded messages with the latest highway information at (800) 427-7623.

Ah yes, I will be checking their website daily.

Reminds me of many times when we lived in Half Moon Bay with only three roads out of the place, and two of them subject to frequent slides, and the third going nowhere where civilization existed!

Thanks for the post.
