I threw out a piece of old french bread into the yard for the chickens and whatever to eat. I looked out the window during the weekend and saw this in the tree and I asked my husband "What is that?" "Bread. I thought you put it there." I didn't put it there. Our son didn't put it there. He'd have to get up from in front of his computer. And the only way to get it there would be to stand on a side hill in the berry patch on a ladder. Too much effort for me. My conclusion was a hoarding squirrel put it there of which have plenty of things to eat. My husband said it would be an effort for a squirrel to get a piece of bread that size up a tree and so perfectly placed. And nothing has been back to claim it but a few birds pecking at it which they have plenty of sunflowers in the feeder near it.<_<

Tranasores- fiber Rex have been known to swoop down from the loondack and perch on a Lem and share French bread and berry wine with woodpeckers in your hood lol

Two possibilities come to my mind:

1) You may underestimate the range of your own pitching arm
or
2) If there are raccoons in your neighborhood one of them could have stashed it up there.

If a raccoon, he has not been back. We have may had another causality. Went out to put the chickens away and could not find them in the shed. Found them roosting in a tree next to the box like they were afraid minus one chicken. We trapped two possum but have not got anything to take the bait in the traps the last couple of weeks.

Hoo boy- Your reference to the presence of chickens in your first post is another reason I suspected a raccoon. I lost nearly a whole flock one by one due to those critters! They cleaned out my Koi pond, too. They're really vicious predators, especially with easy-pickins like domestic birds/fish. We didn't have any luck trapping them as they're so smart. Those that were pestering our chickens did all eventually die of lead poisoning, if you know what I mean...

Another chickens-as-attractant possibility is a raptor of some kind, though it seems unlikely to me that such birds would be attracted to the bread enough to pick it up and stash it in a tree.

I'd say you're on the right track with racoons but a Raven could have done it.

Pretty sure it was Big Foot He had a quick lunch of freash chicken and put the bread up for later.You know they don't like to be seen and sometimes they will leave stuff behind for the next one comming thru that same trailso becareful ! they will get upset if the racoons try to claim it!

Ok all the suggestions sound good. I just like the Big Foot idea, nothing like a good mystery when you cann't go camping.
