How many miles/hours of road time a day for you?

When we go 'glamping', it is always on one of our holidays (some MUCH longer than others) and we have found its not all about the mileage or hours driven.

We usually drive till we get to the next scenic location along our route. We too are early risers, especially when on the road, and quite often are up, done the 3 S's folded up camp and gotten on the road by 7:00 A.M.
Gassing up the evening beforehand saves time and breakfast is usually eaten somewhere down the line, just before launch time. Time to pull off the road usually around noon(ish). Gives the driver ample time to stop relax and smell the roses, ....well before suppertime!!!

We found about 250 miles was comfortable. That's about 4 hours @ 60 mph but with stops for lunch and coffees the trip often took more than 6.
The longest days were through Texas where we did about 350 miles in one day which I found tiring.
We're retired so there was no rush

Do you not run into CG's that have later then noon check in times?

In our admittedly limited camping so far I have not run into an early arrival as being much of a problem. We camp at State Parks and even if we cannot officially “check in” there is always somewhere to pull off and then hike and check things out until check in time. Only one place has even mentioned that we were early, but our camp site was empty & ready so they checked us in.

Well here are my rules for vacation driving which seems bit different than some here. Rule one NO INTERSTATES once out of Florida! Rule 2, NO CHAIN Restaurants, Rule 3, NO MORE than 300 miles a day, which can sometimes be a long day due to RULE 1…..
Just want to have fun and relax but that work thing can get in the way sometimes.

Cari really likes to drive & I enjoy navigating since it gives me an excuse to play with gadgets. That said I can tell when Cari's type A short-fuse My-way-or-the-highway personality needs a break...or she's gonna go-road-rage...any I quickly swap out with my longer-than-a-summer-day's fuse type B it's-all-good personality. A perfect example of how opposites attract in action.

We do have a set of favorite camp destinations that are from 1 to 4 hours away from us on the Oregon Coast and try to set out so that traffic should flow well all the way. That and we do our trips on weekdays so we typically have the camps to ourselves...

I'm leaving in the morning, 650 mile trip, usually takes a little under 11 hours with the camper and truck, 9.5 or so with the car (3-4 less gas stops).

10-12 hours is about enough.

I don't like driving and I don't like towing and driving because I never see a flippin' thing! Two lane roads are worse. I stick to the interstates and get where I want to go as soon as I can get there. But, I'm still working. I'm hoping ALL this changes in the future.

Now, just need to find someone to drive so I can look out a different window than the windshield and gazing at the mirrors to see if I'm jamming up traffic behind me.

There was a psychological report out some time back
that said that "driving" makes us feel happy. So those
that drive for a long time should be pretty HAPPY, HAPPY, HAPPY.

We made a 1200 mile trip last week. I tried to figure a half
way stopping point but felt pretty good so went even further.
Thought it would give us a better second day.

On the way back I was really feeling pretty good and thought
I would pull a 24 hour drive. But my GPS kept taken me off
the path and we would up in Atlanta, GA during evening rush
hour..................ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHhhh. I was such a mess
we pulled up in Rome, GA and made it another two day trip.

I just laid out a route for our next trip down that will take
NO Interstate and we will by-pass ALL big cities. About the
same distance, but will go through towns every 5 to 10 miles
with some 30 to 40 miles apart. I have no idea what the driving
time will be, so will just have to plan on taking however it will take.
It may take twice as much time. But should see something other
than asphalt shoulders.............LOL

Ditto Donna. My time is finite, so I'm getting where I'm going so I can relax instead of sitting in a vehicle.

I agree with donna about sticking to the interstate. If I'm driving a long distance, the interstates make it easier. You don't have to deal with local traffic, and You don't get to see anything. That being said, I like to plan my driving so that I only do 300 to 400 miles in a day. When I know that I will just be stopping for the night, and not unhitching, I also tend to start out late morning or early afternoon. Kind of backfired on me a few weeks ago when I found myself driving through Houston, TX in rush hour traffic... Live and learn

We prefer to do no more than about 250 miles a day (often doing less), but we've done more than that when we've had to. Now that both my DH and I are retired and in our "senior" years, we find that our bodies start protesting loud and clear if we put in too long a day behind the wheel even with frequent breaks to stretch our legs. Keeping our mileage low allows us plenty of time to stop and explore interesting places when they present themselves. I do understand that those with limited time, because they're still working or have other obligations, have to put in long days of driving but I'm glad we no longer have to do that very often.

I find that the best trips are those without plans. I have no set amount of time to drive or when to stop. Sometimes I drive 3 or 4 hours sometimes up to 16 hours. The seat in my truck is quite comfortable, curse control allows me to move my feet a bit, power seat allows for changing sitting position. A rest and stretch every couple hours is pretty important. I stop when I get sleepy, what ever time of day that is. In the middle of the day a 1/2 nap sometimes is what's needed. I never worry about where I'm going to sleep. I think in the past 10 years of using the Scamp I've spent about 3 single nights in an RV park or campground. I hate paying for simple nights sleep. Rest areas, casinos, Wal-Mart, Truck stops all server for a little sleep.

My wife and I just drove from Dayton, OH to home near St Paul, MN yesterday with our Scamp. It was a bit over 700 miles and a bit over 14 hours. We would have liked to stop along the way to stop and smell the roses and see the sights, but sometimes that is not possible.

I drove across Texas at its widest 730 miles. Then across New Mexico--only another 160 miles before stopping at the rest area a few miles into Arizona. I did not want to spend two days in Texas, and had a second wind so I decided to set a goal of sleeping in Arizona. I was not towing.

My record unladen non stop was 1500 miles in a day. I was dead tired when approaching St Louis and pressed on to avoid the morning traffic and road construction. It would have been hell. Then on the other side there was nowhere to stop. I eventually found a casino parking lot and crashed there in the back of my pickup--which had a cap and comfy long twin bed in the back.

Traveling laden I tend to stop more frequently perhaps 40% of what I drive unladen. When you have the comforts of home it is easy to stop, slow down for whatever reason. Sometimes I'm fresh but the truckers passing me at high speed are annoying. I try to keep up, to minimize the passing but often feel it is not worth it at night and find a place to stop. I no longer feel rushed and enough taking a leisurely breakfast and stop more frequently. It is much nicer and the dogs are happier. I also tend to avoid the interstates, like many of you have mentioned, because I like the slower pace.

Some people are into "shunpiking" where they avoid the freeways. Not me. Two lane roads, scenic though they may be, are often stressful with tailgaters pushing even if I'm doing the speed limit. Don't get me started on the Olympic Peninsula!

If I drive, then I drive... Usually 800-900 miles/day when I travel in my Grand Marquis from motel to motel for a night sleep, or ~500 miles/day when pulling Scamp 16 behind from RV park to RV park. I love to drive...
