Trailer: 2020 Escape 19 (was 2005 16 ft Scamp Side Dinette and 2005 Fleetwood (Coleman) Taos pop-up)

On our maiden 1600 mile roundtrip between Atlanta and PA with our 05 Scamp 16 SD with most options, towed by our 2004 Dodge Dakota 4.7 auto V-8 2WD;

Normal mileage without the trailer is 19 at about 72 MPH.
Overall average on the trip with the Scamp attached was 15.5 MPG cruising at about 62 MPH. I'll expect a little higher when I'm not crossing the hills in NC and VA.

Kept in in OD most of the trip per the owners manual since it wasn't hunting gears (except turned OD off on long or steep hills), but tried one tank with the OD off for the entire tank and mileage dropped to 14.85 on that tank. It appears that keeping it in OD works best for my combination, and the Dakota pulled the Scamp without effort.

The 6 year old tires that I was procrastinating about replacing this year will be replaced sooner than later since the curbside tire went kaput on this trip. Funny thing is that I had stopped to refuel 5 miles earlier, the tires and hub were cool so no temperature problems, and the tire looked fine. I believe I may have picked up a nail or something at the refueling stop because when I looked in my mirror 5 miles down the road the only indication that the tire was flat (and the tread coming off) was just a teensy bit of wiggle and the belly band was no longer level with my mirror when I glanced at it. Now I have to decide if I want to upgrade to load range D 13" tires because I'd like a little more buffer on the tire capacity, or jump up to 14" tires (which likely would require some fiberglass trimming).

Last year over 6,000 mile trip averaged 15.1 mpg.
Dodge Dakota 4.7l magnum between 55 and 60 mph.
In areas where I dropped to 50 mph mpg went up to about 16 mpg.
Looks like speed have more to do with gas consumption than tow vehicle.

Steve, what's the mpgs difference between grades of gas? certainly the cost difference is significant.

I don’t know what the difference is. The Pathfinder is a premium fuel spec by Nissan but the difference around town using mid grade gas is negligible. When towing out of overdrive, on hills you can feel the difference in power between mid grade gas and premium gas. From my house traveling north takes me through the mountains and traveling north east takes me up to 8,000 feet. Traveling west, south or east takes me to sea level. The 3.5 motor V-6 making 250 HP in a 5300 Lb. mid size SUV with a 5000 lb tow capacity back in 2001 was a real treat especially with no turbo. Fuel cost is very significant but it easily tows my heavier Boston Whaler and is still fun to drive. Towing so far is just a small part of my drive time as I am still working. Fuel cost during the work week is a small amount of my costs as I only drive 10 miles total to work and back. I bought the truck used and paid cash so I can afford to splurge on fuel. Buying a new car/truck will never reap a cash reward in savings so no need to change. My back-up car is a 1974 Ford Bronco, for that you just leave the gas hose in the tank.

My Trailer _______________Scamp 5th wheel Deluxe, 2004
Size ____________________19'

Tow rig:
Make _____________Toyota
Model ____________2013 Tacoma SR5, double cab, short bed, 4WD, towing package
Eng size ___________4.0 L V6
Stick or Auto _______5 speed auto
2 wheel drive _______towing in 2WD
4 wheel drive _______(I do not tow in 4WD)
How fast ___________60 - 65 MPH
MPG towing _________16 MPG

Speed or wind make a big difference. On my trip from Vermont to Colorado and Wyoming and back got 14 MPG with strong head wind, on another part of the trip got 17 MPG with tail wind. Without wind got about 16 to 16.5 MPG. I keep the trailer tires at the right pressure - 45 psi and always dump before getting on the road to keep it light. The Tacoma gets 20 MPG by itself.

Well this last weekend was my longest tow, down to ParkLiner for the Battery box upgrade and some other improvements...

I averaged about 16.5 mpg with my Rav4 v6. I guess not running the air conditioner makes a big difference lol. I pretty much filled up every 200 miles and took just about 12 gallons of gas. My speed varied from 55 to 65mph.
