GVWR for most trailers is the combined weight rating of the tires touching the road.

It's usually whatever the limiting factor is in the factory equipment -- In the case of many earlier Eggs, that might have been the axle, not the sum of the tires, even if the tires carried a low rating. BTW, it usually does NOT include the tongue weight because that is carried by the tow vehicle.
Remember that when you are towing, what counts is the scale weight of the actual trailer, loaded for a trip, not the "dry and perhaps optionless" weight on the official papers.

I guess I should have said, "... limited by the combined weight rating ..."
"The Egg" has a labeled GVWR as 3,500 lbs. However, the combined weight rating of the tires is 2,860 lbs. This disparity is the reason some RV'er have tire failures and think it is due to faulty tires.
I have had one tire failure on the curb side and none on the street side. Could this be due to the fact that the the measured weight on the curb side is 1,400 lbs and the measured street side weight is only 1,175 lbs.?
Perhaps we could have a survey of how many street side failures versus curb side failures for each type of RV. Included in the survey could be measured weight at each tire versus the tire ratings.

The tire rating for a 17' Casita is 1760 X 2 =3520#
The 3500# GVWR for the Casita is the Dexter axle rating, which is the lower.

Towed my 1981 Burro 13 footer to the county dump last week. They have a drive-on scale for trucks. The Burro weighed in at 1130 pounds.
This weight is the trailer alone, with no propane or water, or camping supplies, but otherwise ready to go camping. (Hoo Hah....short trip next weekend.)

You are absolutely correct, assuming you keep you tires inflated to 50 PSI.
The 1430 lbs. rating quoted was for the two tires I purchased from Casita last year which I was told to inflate to 35 PSI.
After having my Casita weighed at the Blubonnet Rally I always check to make sure they are inflated to 50 PSI.

[b] Specification Basis
What specs are we looking for here? - empty and dry
- empty except for freshwater tank full (the Boler factory spec condition, also currently used with GVWR to calculate load capacity in Canada)
- typical as prepared for use (with cargo)
- maximums (GVWR)
- ...
In any case, 1979 is probably not considered "late model", so I'm out.
[b] Tire Ratings
My Boler was factory-equipped with tires rated for 1500 lb each, and I assume that this is the source of the 3000 lb GAWR, since the axle itself is rated at 3500 lb.

I don't quite follow this:CD, do you have tires which are rated for 50 PSI (presumably a Load Range C trailer-specific tire) and were just told to underinflate them; or, do you have tires rated for 35 PSI which you are now greatly overinflating to 50 PSI? I must have missed something...

Near Midway BC I came across a free vehicle scale that allowed me to determine that my 2005 13’ Deluxe Scamp weighed in at 1880 pounds including a tongue weight estimate of 164 pounds. Included is 12 gallons of water and about 200 pounds of food, clothing, and tools. That makes a dry weight of 1580 pounds, somewhat more than the Scamp literature indicates.

1973 Love Bug 13'. Does not have any holding tanks. Does have furnace. Weighed with full LP tank. Original doors were removed during rehab, I replaced them with doors that
I made out of box car siding. New axle installed. Spare tire hanging on back.
The trailer was weighed on a certified scale. Total weight was 960 pounds with the tongue weight at 100 pounds.
I usually pull with a Chevy Astro with a rated tow capacity of over 5000 lbs and I can't tell the Bug is back there.

1980 Trillium 5500 (18 feet).
It's got a rooftop Coleman A/C and a REAL mattress (heavy!) Porta-potti, no water in the tank, lot's of "stuff" for a couple of weeks on the road including screen room, chairs, inflatable kayaks, etc., 2 24# propane tanks and a deep cycle marine battery.
Oh, and 10 pounds of Vidalia onions was tossed in just before we used the scales in Georgia.
Total: 2780 lbs.
They sure built those puppies right.
