How much to ask

I will put my 1976 Leisurecraft tent-trailer up for sale at the end of July. I need to use it a time or two yet, before my new Escape 17 is ready for delivery.

For what I call sentimental reasons, I was going to ask $900, because that's what I paid for it twenty years ago.

It's about what you would expect for a 32 year old trailer ( except that it was stored in a garage, unused for 10 years ). The canvas is worn in a couple places and I "fixed" it with ShoeGoo. Several of the zippers are missing teeth and may or may not still work. It has no heater, has a two-burner propane stove-top, an ice box that is highly efficient at melting ice. I recovered the seats with black vinyl. I bought a couple thin foamies to put atop the foam on the beds so I don't wake up with sore hips.

Had the wheel-bearings repacked again last year and I painted the frame with Tremclad.

Have never had a leak I had to worry about. More concerned about squirrels dropping pine-cones on the fibreglass roof. Sounds like a bomb going off.

Basically, if I wasn't moving up to the comfort of the Escape, with toilet, shower and a furnace, I'd keep it and use it.

So, what is a reasonable price to ask?

Would have gone to my sister-in-law, but she has lofty ambitions to match her mortgage, make that re, re, re, re, re, re, remortgage.

I did offer it to a guy who stopped in to ask if it was for sale about a year ago, but $900 was too rich for him and he hasn't countered, but he's got a couple months to think about it.

If nothing else, I'll get a rough likeness of Jesus imprinted on the canvas and put it up on EBay.

FYI, I have seen pop ups the age of yours go for anywhere from $200 to $900 depending on condition. I have seen others priced higher, but those sellers are out of their minds........ Good Luck! Robin

Most Boy Scouts and leaders I know would turn there nose up at such an offer. Boy scouts hike to camp sites, camp in tents, unless they're at a organized permanent Scout camp. The exception would if they could sell it to buy "real camping" equipment.

FYI, I have two grandsons in scouting, also daughters and their husbands involved in leadership.

However, if one wishes to donate rv, cars, airplanes, boats, etc. to some charity there's place that would be happy to take them. They do a bit of work on the items and resell to support a charity.

In today's economy, with people barely meeting their everyday expenses, your admittedly worn tent trailer would be a hard sell.
I might ask no more than $500, and take half that. I see a LOT of these old rigs getting their camper bodies ripped off the frame and converted to a flatbed trailer for hauling ATV's and Motorcycles around here.

Start high and drop later if it doesn't sell. Might be a different market now with folks looking for camper to cut fuel costs...

I'll put it up on Craig's List. My buddy sold his tent trailer and trampoline in no time. I ended up selling my trampoline the next day to one of the people who were too late to get his, so I didn't even post mine.

Well, that was easy. Sold the old Leisurecraft tent trailer this evening. The buyer had stopped by about a year ago and asked if it was for sale. He left his name and number.

I offered it to him for $900 since that was what I paid for it 20 years ago. After asking people what I should ask, I called him back and offered it at $550. He wants to make a $250 deposit this weekend, even though he can't finish the purchase until July 20 when I'm done using it.

I think I done good. Just about covers the cost of the new fly rod I ordered.

I was going to say the same thing, 200 to 900. but given the increase in gas prices... it might be on the high end of that scale. anything less than 1000 is also pretty rare to see so I think it will go quickly at 900. they can always talk you down a bit.
