We see them all the time while up north, the reason I have split vision, the reason I'm anti-cross-eyed, to keep an eye on each side of the road. It's not just your headlights, they can be a daytime issue. Last year we had one run in front of us.

As a result we rarely drive at night in Newfoundland. Newfoundland in recent years has become proactive in recent years in high density traffic and high density moose areas. Leaving the ferry at Port aux Basque they have a moose fence for probably 50 miles to keep them off the highway. Between Gander and Grand Falls they have a section with moose radar that produces an alarm when moose are head towards the road.

As we drive further up the West coast there are no such protections. We have seen both Moose and Caribou in the road. Once off the Trans-Canada you will be driving slower, not because of traffic, there is little, but due to the twisty road, the hills and the simple desire to just stop and look.

I remember Newfoundland's first Moose protection device, a sign as you enter Gros Morne Provincial Park stating the number of Moose Accidents. Every year there are 6-800 Moose accidents in NL.

If someone flashes you lights it's not a radar trap but a moose alert.

Mostly you have to stay alert.

When I was a fledgling driver many years ago in northern Maine, there was a picture in the paper of a new Honda Accord that had met a moose at about 40 MPH. All four occupants survived, but only one didn't need major surgery before going home. It made an impression.

Hitting a deer ruins your bodywork. Hitting a moose is likely to be fatal to you and the vehicle.

Hmmm... I am 1/4th Canadian (PEI) and once, while in Canada, I slipped and fell into a pile of still warm Moose poop... Does that bring me up to 1/2 Canadian...??? LOL

Moose are a prime reason I like driving BIG sturdy vehicles!

I was seriously thinking about downsizing from an Safari mini van when a yearling ran into the side of my van. I'd slowed down because of mooseee shadows on the right shoulder - it was Momma. Teenager moose ran smack into the front corner of the van. Shattered a foot of windshield, took out my side mirror, left a hoof print on the drivers' door and a butt print on the rear quarter panel.

By the time emergency services arrived I was out directing traffic.

The same night, 10 miles away, a guy ran in to an adult moose while the guy was driving a compact. The moose landed in the passenger side of the car and kicked him in the head while they were thrashing around. Ambulance air-lifted him to a Class 1 trauma centre. He spent weeks in ICU and then months in rehab. He'll never be the same again, aside from the steel plates in his head he has extensive brain injury.

I cancelled all plans to downsize and actually went up to a full size van. I'd have a tank up here if I could.

In B.C. every year on average 4 people are killed and 316 people are injured due to wildlife collisions. Mostly moose and deer.

Moose. elk and deer here in Sk. I heard that the population is going up and widening its range. Plenty of moose in the southern half of the province now.


My son spotted some elk beside the road a few years back and stopped his brand new car. When they moved they ran - and four ran into the side of his car!

While we have moose in Wisconsin, its the deer that cause the most damage. Humans had 8 fatalities and 400 injuries in 2013. They don't say how the deer did.
