Hunter Compact frames: interchangeable?

Will the shell of a Hunter Compact II fit onto the frame of a Hunter Compact Jr.?

I have no idea but I own a Compact II that was given a totally new frame with longer tongue, higher clearance, a torsion axle, and 15" tires. I'm happy with all of that as I travel on dirt roads from time to time. But it seems to have added a lot of weight to the rig, perhaps unnecessarily.

I doubt it. The Compact Jr. is narrower.

Seeing how the mounting surface is flat.....why wouldn't it....holes may be in different places though.
Can you not just fix or copy your original frame?

a complication with frame replacement, at least in some states, would be the VIN plate... thats generally attached to the frame, in some cases, the VIN is stamped directly into the frame.

It is just a paperwork complication, not that big of a deal if you follow the steps listed on the state's DOT site. You can get the new frame stamped, you can remove and install metal plates, etc.

Wheel wells won't line up with wheels. No support under edge of shell.

It might work the other way- narrower shell on wider frame. Putting a wider shell onto a narrower frame will require a lot of modification.

There is no actual VIN on that trailer, and there are no special stamps. Best solution...Just get a set of welder's stamps and copy the serial # from the title and old frame onto the new frame if desired, then destroy the # on the old frame if it actually has one.

Waste of time...Of course you could cut the old piece of steel with the number and weld it to the new frame.

Compact Jr frame

I will be building a new frame for my compact jr, the original frame is 43 inches wide and made of 1 1/2 c channel. very under built, the tongue has been bent badly and poorly reinforced.
The new frame will be constructed of 3x2 box tubing with a few extra cross braces.

the original frame may have been ok if the camper was always on smooth roads. but going forward i plan on going on gravel roads and places where its not always smooth.

With the new frame and added equipment my Compact jr will weigh more than it did in 1972, but it will be more capable and comfortable.

but if some one really wants the old frame and axle let me know

Hunter Compact frames: interchangeable?

Thought I would share what a compact jr frame looks like.
I lifted the shell off the frame today.
The frame is in very bad shape. Not sure how it made it all these years. Notice the terrible weld/repair where the tongue starts. Click image for larger version

I was concerned that a 2x3 11 gage frame may be too light duty. But after look at what was factory installed, I could get by with a 2x2 11 gage frame.

Ron, thank you very much for putting in the effort to post these pictures. I'm very interested. It sounds like you are going to build your own frame. I may end up doing the same thing one day.
