I finally found a
Scamp. I had been looking for a bit after first looking at teardrop trailers but realizing that they would never work for a family of four.
How did I find said
Scamp? I placed an ad on Craiglist in Kansas City that I was looking for a 13 footer that sleeps four as that was really all that I wanted to spend on it. Right before Christmas, a woman emails me and tells me that her mother-in-law is selling a
Scamp. Turns out her mother-in-law wanted to sell it and asked the daughter to see how much she could get for it so she got on CL to see what they were going for. Turns out my ad was the only thing that showed up!
I ask for more information and talk to them that night. Turns out it is a 1990 16-footer for less than what I was willing to pay for a 13-footer. I ask for pictures as they live about 6 hours from me in NW Kansas. A week goes by so I ask if they had any luck with the pictures. I finally got them this last Wednesday and they are the pictures linked below. After seeing the pictures, I told them it was
sold and I'll be there Sunday.
I had to take my brothers Yukon because as I was installing the hitch on our van, EVERY single bolt either broke or the welded nut broke off the frame. The Yukon was a great hauler. I did the whole twelve hours in one day (today). The sellers had someone check the wheels and grease the bearings so it would be ready to roll. It was.
One neat thing is that the original sales receipt is in there along with all of the brochures from 1990.
One weird thing is that he has another hitch welded on to the back of the bumper. He said he sometimes pulled a very small fishing boat behind it. I about fell over. He said he sometimes put his
generator and a cooler on one of those racks behind it too. That had to make for some interesting tongue
weight readings!
A big thanks to Greg A. for all of his advice along the way. He was very helpful as I did my search. Especially when I sent him the pictures and he said, "Dude. Tell them that it is
sold."
Be prepared for lots of questions. I look forward to participating here.
Here is a link to the pictures. As you can see, it's about as unmolested as you can get except for the bumper.
