Inflatable Kayaks

Does anyone have any experience with these? I wonder how well they hold up when you get into an area that has sticks, dead heads and rock hiding under the water. I'm very interested in them as my daughter has a real kayak and loves it. I think the inflatable ones one would be great as I could take it on the road with me. I can't lift a hard kayak by myself anymore so this just might be the answer for me. I would love to hear from those that have one, or have tried one out.

Check out the TV series "Motion" Motion | The Live Well Network. The host, Greg Aiello, brings novices "into the woods" and other outdoor places. On several episodes they have packed in inflatable kayaks. Check it out!
Happy Camping!

I couldn't find the TV episode that showed the inflatables, but enjoyed the I haven't holed one yet. There are "rubber duckies" that are specifically designed to take a beating and are used in whitewater. Look for one with a reinforced or rubberized bottom. They are heavier than the vinyls, but will take more abuse.
Happy Paddling!

Here's a link with a few pics. I love them! (sorry that there are lots of raft pics there...limited time at work) The are very popular on the Nantahala River in Western NC...and so much fun. I have wanted one for a while, but i have a flat water kayak and haven't seen the need...until i bought the Scamp

Some of the inflatables are really tough and can take a lot of abuse. This one for instance:

I have a Sevylor Tahiti................love it. Very durable ie dog nails, inflates fast and is compact when the air is out.

As someone who has used Sevylor Tahiti kayaks for years I can give them--and probably most inflatable kayaks--a hearty endorsement.

Before I retired, my job allowed for taking a day off with only a few days notice. At the time I was into floating the Mississippi River north of the Minneapolis/St. Paul Metro area. With very little prep I was able throw the kayak and my Montague folding mountain bike into the truck and head off for the next piece of river to be enjoyed. My friends did not have the same flexibility for time off so I did these floats by myself. With the bike lashed to the front of the kayak and my waterproof radio lashed into the kayak, I was able to float ten to twelve miles down river and then deflate the kayak and secure it to the rear carrier of the bike. A nice bike ride back to the truck and a pleasant day of floating comes to an end.

I use a 12 volt inflater like this to air the kayak up quickly.

Metro Vacuum 12-IDA32 Magic Air 12-Volt Inflator/Deflator - Amazon.com

Really fast inflation!

I think you will enjoy your kayak.

A note for those needing a lighter weight hard kayak... Pelican makes a number of very light weight kayaks. Many of my friends who can't handle the weight of rotomolded kayaks have switched to these. They are available at many of the big sporting goods stores and the prices are reasonable. Not for shooting waterfalls but will handle medium rapids nicely.

I am an avid kayaker.......have used all kinds of boats. Inflatables are good boats....you will enjoy. They are not as fast as most regular kayaks but that should not be an issue. They will take a beating. I have several regular kayaks......you will really love the experience. Have fun.....happy paddling!

I second the speed. In my experience they give a good workout on the lake to get where your going due to the speed....but not grueling by any means. But on the river a fabulous time! We all laugh and have a super fun time. You are going to love it!

I'm not worried about the speed. I just want to get out relax and enjoy the water. I love being on the water ... Fishing, in canoe, or swimming. Some of the places that I camp have the lake right at my site and it's so peaceful in the mornings and evenings. This inflatable kayak is going to open up a whole new world for me. Many times I sat on the shoreline wishing to get out there. Now I will be able to enjoy it.

We bought this one -
http://www.innovakayak.com/store/store.aspx#!/~/product/category=279414&id=8655283

Have only used it a few times and it felt great. It easily fits into our tow vehicle without stealing space needed for other camping supplies. There is a smaller version for one paddler.

This thread is several years old, and I am bumping it to the top.
We are considering getting a two-person inflatable kayak, the Sea Eagle 370.
Does anyone on the forum have recent experience with the newer generation of inflatable kayaks? Thanks.
