Trailer: Converted Fiberglass Cargo Trailer
Posts: 8
Hi, I'm new here. I have a converted fiberglass cargo trailer. I'm looking for people in my area to go camping with. I notice that most of you have the traditional fiberglass units. Would I be welcome at your gatherings with my converted unit? And are there any gatherings planned in the near future in Alberta?

Welcome to FiberglassRV Cathy, we're glad you found us! A couple of places to check for gatherings is at the top right of any page the Calendar also the Rallies, Get-togethers, Molded Meets forum.

At the Oregon Gathering last month, I got there early and there was a converted cargo trailer parked across from my site. Without being intrusive, I was able to see through the double doors (on the side) and was surprised to see how homey and well thought out the conversion was. I'm thinking it would be a perfect setup for someone who was looking to stealthy full-time.

Do you have any pictures to share?

PS: Although you don't fit the exact nature of what we generally think of as Molded Lightweight Fiberglass RVs...due to the manufacturing, any gathering worth going to would welcome you, after all it's not just about the "brand" it's also about the people.

Thanks Doug. Unfortunately I've used up my holidays for this year. I took a 2 week camping trip to Nebraska with my trailer. I think I spotted the one in Sept. on the calendar, when is the other one? I'll keep them in mind for next year when I'm planning my holidays. My cargo conversion is roughly based on a teardrop trailer with the galley on the outside at the back. I've been hanging around the teardrop message board and it was the International Teardrop Gathering that I went to in Nebraska. I had a great time but there aren't many gatherings in western Canada. As a single woman, I am looking for other people to go camping with as it gets lonely sitting in a campground by yourself.

Very true. A lot of what we do here is share ideas, admire the adaptations and renovations others have made in their trailers, then try to apply the lessons learned to our own needs. It's really interesting to read about and see pictures of what other people have done . . . so welcome and thanks for sharing!

Let me add to the welcome chorus and say what a great job you've done on the conversion. I'm intrigued by the concept. What does the rig weigh, how long did it take you to complete it, did you do all the work yourself or were there things you needed hired-done. Whatever, the result looks super.
cheers

Welcome Cathy!
What a great looking trailer! It looks quite aerodynamic; what make is it?
Every time I've ever been in a cargo trailer, I always think "Hey, I could live in this!",
and start imagining where everything would go. I like the fact that my wheels
are "inboard" on the Casita, though, for going around corners.
Looking forward to seeing more photos and hearing your stories.

Is your Buick Rendevous all-wheel-drive? How does it work as a tow vehicle?
Does it give good gas mileage? My father's Pontiac Aztek (same chassis) gets about 22mpg in most
driving; it's all-wheel-drive. Been thinking of using it to tow with once he's ready for a new car.

Welcome Cathy, great job on the conversion! That is a very cool looking trailer, I'll have to keep an eye out for it on the road. I'm just outside Edmonton and new to trailering myself.

PS.. nice Saturn. Mine has over 300,000 on it now, great car.

Cathy, you are right, there don't seem to be too many fiberglass meets (that I know of) between you and I. There is at least one on Vancouver Island, but the date(s) escape me. While I don't think there are very many (if any) singles in our group, I can pretty much guarantee you'd NOT be left on the outside looking in UNLESS it was by your own choosing. Our next meet 'should be' in the spring, May long weekend when travelling over the Mts. ISN'T a pleasant experience!!

I started to do the work and then my dad took pitty on me and hauled it home to finish off. The basic design is mine and I had 99% of the materials bought for him to work with. The last time I had it weighed was on the way back from dad's with all the extra materials in it and it weighed in about 1900#. I bought the shell from Trailers Unlimited in Edmonton, they installed the windows and side door. My son and I added rigid foam insulation and had started on the panelling when dad took over. My dad is retired and is much better with tools than I am so he had it finished in a month. It would have taken mme much longer.

Palmer, the Rendezvous pulls it great, hardly know its there. The trailer does cut the gas mileage a bit, but its still far better than the bigger rigs are getting.

Hope that answers most questions.

Thanks for your response and a look at your rig. If you wind up here on the Wet coast for a rally, maybe we'll get to see it in person.
cheers

Maybe next year I'll make it out there.
