Arghhhh... the kingpin of the "fifth wheel" hitch is like the spindle of a wheel assembly, and so this type of hitch added to the four wheels of the tow vehicle led to the name of this hitch style. The very first ones were actually a wheel complete with hub/bearings/spindle mounted in the open tow car trunk,, and the trailer attached to the spindle. Flexibility of the tire was the only thing that allowed relative motion in the other axes.

No, these hitches don't look much like wheels anymore.

Information is good. Lack of information is not so good, but misinformation is much worse. Check facts, and apply common sense liberally.

I found this on another camper forum and then this topic came up so I just had to post it.

Well just to throw a "wrench" in this topic How would you rate this one....

World's Coolest Hot Rod Motorhome - The DecoLiner - Hot Rod Magazine

would you call it a camper,RV, or hot rod ????

Not sure how I would rate it myself...but I must say the guy sure put lots of work into it. I might also add it sure is not my style!

The DecoLiner is far cooler in person than the pictures can show. It was made in Oregon and occasionally has been seen cruisin' in downtown Portland.

I see Jim Bennet says that anything he "recreates" in is an RV. Jim that could mean a whole lot of things, if you get my meaning.

Here in Mich. we go with "motor home" if it's got a motor thingy to make it go. But... since motor homes are a camper, and towed camping trailers are campers, both used for the purpose of recreational camping.... I say RV covers both.

State does treat them different for license plate and title. Motor home vs trailer title and plate. But then state treats quads, dirt bikes and snow mobiles different too. They are ORV or Off Road Vehicles.

I also say campers get into some kind of weird conversations during the winter months.

Cabin fever. Or is that wana be RV'ing fever?

For the record, I think that vehicle is a general term meaning conveyance. So, I guess the little red wagon may be an RV, if you are having fun.
I have even heard it used in terms of movies and their relationship to actors. Like the latest Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle.

That would be a "WV", or "Wreckreational Vehicle"...

I figure like a lot of ya'll this post got me reading over on Wikipedia. The article on the history of the 5th wheel is hilarious. Read the second paragraph under the 'Origin' section in particular:

Fifth wheel coupling - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
