Question Is this possible???

Hi, All

I've been browsing other trailer types and keep coming across what seem to me to be unbelievably low weights in stick- built trailers.
Here's one for sale at Tin Can Classifieds - 1954 Aljoa Sportsman Vintage Travel Trailer - Powered by PhotoPost Classifieds
The ad says it weighs only 1500 LBS.
Does that seem possible???
Sure looks like a lot more room than in my 1400 lb Trillium...

Francesca

Sure, why not? They don't all have to be heavy.

I moved a 13 ft. stick built about 250 miles for a friend last week.
I average about mpg when I tow my fully loaded Scamp
I imagine the trailer weighed less than 1300 pounds but the aerodynamics are not the same as an Egg.
I could feel the difference in much slower acceleration and up hills. I averaged 18 mpg on that trip.

OOPS!
You forgot to put the number in!

I'd certainly expect a loss in fuel efficiency since there's so much more surface area- I'm just shocked to discover that my "lightweight trailer" isn't much lighter than a stick-built that looks to have at least half again as much room in it!

Like I said, they don't all have to be heavy but, I went to move a sticky tandem axle trailer the other week for a guy and guess what, it almost removed the bumper from my F150. I should have realized that it was quite healthy when he told me that I needed a 2 5/8 ball for it.

I was tired of the $1,000.00 a month payments that went with the Dodge, so it went bye bye about a year ago.

The early Airstreams were considerably lighter than later models, yet the early ones are often felt to be better-built units. My impression is that the 'bulking up' in weight was due to the increasing amount of accessories built into the interior. I don't have any data though. So yes, it's possible that it might weigh only 1500.

In bygone days, I knew a lot of guys with 12 second Camaros and Chevelles, then came 1974 and they all miraculously became 25MPG economy cars!
Numbers skills can be subjective sometimes.... Just ask the lady ahead of you in line at WalMart how much she weighs....heck you might just move up a space, witha lump on your head!<_<

Possible, Francesca... But highly unlikely (as you already suspected). Kind of like all the Scamps for sale that claim 900 pounds. That trailer has likely never been on a scale.

This thing 1500 lbs? Well, if it's the effect of dry rot + all the rust from the frame flaked off... hmm, than, maybe 1500 but more kg than lbs...
Mind you, it's just my opinion after pulling few of these things and never weighting one with anything other than the accelerator and brake pedals.

I started looking around because we've got a 1952 32-ft. "Angel" on the property and I'm trying to decide if it's worth saving...
So far I can't even figure out who MADE it, but I'm more curious than ever about its construction. When we got it (1995) there was an original brochure in a drawer that described the trailer design as the result of the post WWII refit of an airplane factory!
I wonder if it's possible that there's aluminum framing under those birch walls...

Wonders will never cease

I averaged 22 mpg on my 4000 trip to Yellowstone last fall
