I was just wondering why Casita doesnt make a 5er?? does anyone know. I think in alot of ways the Casita is a little more classier.
Do you think you could order a Scamp 5er but like the 16' with a side dinnette?? would just just interesting to find out..

I suspect that the market for trailers which require a pickup truck, but are not very large, is quite limited. Reace recently entered this market with the Escape 5.0, and there have been others in the past (Quantum, Bigfoot), but I'll bet it's never been a large market, and won't be any time soon.

Casita is in Texas, where I would guess it's much like Alberta: people with trucks want bigger trailers. The RV lots here are stuffed with 35ft-40ft fifth wheels weighing 10,000 lb to 13,000 lb empty... and there are lots of buyers for them.

I have heard in this forum that Scamp will build just about any layout you want (some just don't work) in the Custom Deluxe version.

I would imagine Brian hit the nail on the head, in order to get a side-dinette Scamp 5th wheel you'd have to go with the deluxe, if it's available at all.

The entire idea of having the side-dinette is so you have leave the big dinette permanently made up into a bed....that's already taken care of by the loft bed in the 5th wheel. So, I don't imagine there's a lot of requests for a side-dinette 5th wheel. Storage is more precious!

I think that what a lot of folks may not realize is that Scamp took an off-road turn with the 5W as a larger trailer and then Casita took their off-road turn with a larger conventional trailer. Both designs serve markets beyond that of the original 13/16 models.

One advantage to a Scamp side dinette 5W is that the rear dinette made into a bed could provide additional sleeping space for a family or friends.

I always thought a rear living room with chairs and a pull up table would be a better choice than a dinette in the Scamp 5th wheel. Many folks who buy them buy them for two anyway, so losing the guest bed isn't a big deal.

That's true, but then you have 2-4 people for sleeping, but sitting space in the side-dinette for only two... so what's the point? Everyone would probably be outside eating at a picnic table, not inside and you'd still miss out on the extra storage needed.

And Casita Enterprises continues to sell trailers faster than they can make them, so why (from their perspective) expand the line?

I suppose the question was rhetorical, but here's an answer anyway...

Manufacturers often drop one model and introduce another, more profitable, model to maximize their business success while keeping their product lineup manageable. Almost every Casita seems to be a 17' unit... if they're still selling a few 13' units, they might drop those (or the 16') to make production room for higher-cost, and likely more profitable, fifth-wheels. Of course, this assumes a market to buy them...

At the Casita Factory in Sept '04, I was told they make 10 per week of the 17', and 2 per week of the 16'.
The molds for both are at the beginning of their production line. They keep the molds for the 13' OUTSIDE,
and when they get an order for a 13', they take the 16' molds out and bring the 13' molds in, then swap them
out again.

They also told me that they had in the past tried to up production to 12, maybe it was 15, units per week,
but that they had had some quality problems at that level and brought it back down to 10 per week.
So I guess a whole new model from Casita would mean them making a major expansion both to their
facility and payroll.

I also contemplated this, as a custom deluxe model. My thought was that it would make a trailer that could sleep up to 6 (with side bunk beds), a front bathroom separating the loft from the rest of the trailer, and no one has to crawl over the bunk bed to reach the loft bed. You'd need both the rear dinette AND the side dinette to seat 6.
