Low cost, effective, safe bug repellent is spelled DEET.

Alf,

Our last camping trip over 4th of July - the family were were camping with did use a spray bottle of Mint Listerine around the camp fire (and on the dogs) to keep the nats and other biting bugs away. I was skeptical at first, but we were not bitten around the ankles by the pesky blood-suckers any longer, and it smelled minty not pesticide-y.

I'm not taking any chances this coming weekend...the Raid Yard-Guard is already packed!!

Drink Red Wine (California hehe).

Bugs won’t bother you. If they do you didn’t drink enough wine.

If the still bite, and you drank enough wine, you won’t care.

Absorbine Supershield Green, all natural horse spray.

http://www.greenhawk.net/cgi-local/SoftCar....html?E+scstore

Made for horses, bought it for the dog, and we like it too.

"The all natural spray that offers an effective alternative to chemical insecticides. Environmentally friendly. A water based, non irritating formula of citronella, tea tree oil, eucalyptus, lavender, pennyroyal, pine needle and witch hazel, combined with lanolin and aloe coat conditioners. 950 ml."

Costs just under $23 US or CDN

You could always try making a voodoo doll shaped like a skeeter. Dance around the campfire holding the doll at arms length and waving it in the campfire smoke. Make at least three trips around the fire. Then stop hold the doll high as you can. Poke it with burning stick a few times. Finish off by tossing the doll into the fire. Bow your head as you watch the fire consume the doll. Jump and click your heals three times.

It might not stop the bugs it would be the whole camps entertainment and probably as effective as many other things I've heard people attempting.
