LA Route

We're driving across Louisiana and decided not to take I-10 across the state. We headed south once we got to New Orleans on Route 90. A marvelous road where it's possible to drive 60 and only two stop lights in 100 miles so far.

We decided to stop in New Iberia, a truly marvelous town with an absolutely beautiful Main Street and a surprisingly wonderful down town. It's just loaded with southern charm and should not be missed.

Definitely one of those lucky stops and I'm sure we'll spend two or three days..

I don't know if it is still in existence, but we stayed in the Belmont Plantation Campground in New Iberia in 1996. A beautiful campground filled with huge oak trees with hanging moss, etc. Visited the Konriko Rice Mill, Avery Island & the Tabasco Sauce factory.

Our major reason for stopping was because I have always been a fan of James Lee Burke's Dave Robicheaux novels, which take place there and wanted to see the location. We discovered it is a wonderful place to visit.

Yes, see Avery Island... But be on the lookout for alligators.

New Iberia

We plan to visit the places mentioned and just bought our first Burke book. Thanks for the tips.

I see you have thoroughly planned your route, which is always an advantage. Any other places you are planning to see? I can't wait to hear about your impressions after the trip and hope you have a great time!

Cleo,

Actually we stumble or maybe drift along rarely planning our trip. Part of the joy is coming upon a New Iberia. Actually there seem to be New Iberias everywhere. We drive short distances and stop early to see what's there, like it and we stay. Unfortunately we have to get to Seattle by June or we would have spent even longer in New Iberia.

Life on the road is great.
