Labor Day Plans?

Hello! Just wondering if anybody has any fun and exciting Labor Day Weekend Plans. I'd initially thought of taking the kids to one of our State Parks but then came to my senses the more I thought about the traffic and crowds, lol. There is a "Teacher in Service" Day the very next friday after Labor Day so I'll probably take the kids for that 3 day weekend instead. Cant wait for it to cool down some and FL camping season to get nice. We'll be limited to Private Camgrounds when the snowbirds arrive but it's better than nothing. T@Bitha looks lonely at the storage facility, need to show her some love.

Patuxent River Naval Air Station, Lexington Park, MD
A Great Air Show with the Blue Angles and many more Aircraft.
This is one of the best shows in the US.
September 3rd and 4th.
Camping at the Solomon Island Navy Campground.

We'll not go anyplace except to our local volunteer fire dept fund raising breakfast on Saturday. Since we retired (eons ago) we normally don't plan on going anywhere unless it's to visit our son, his wife, and kids in Indianapolis. This year that'll be the following weekend.

Mile High Campground, elevation...wait for it...5,280 feet...onna mountain ridge above the Cherokee Indian Reservation in the Great Smokey Mountains.

Hoping for at least one glorious sunset from our western facing site on the ridge.

Since it's semi-primitive camping, we'll be giving the new group 27 deep cycle battery and yet to arrive LED's the once through.

We'll probably "Stay-cation" at home. I've been busy (really busy) knocking out my "Honey-Do" list that rivals some of the youngsters' Santa Claus lists for length. I got into trouble for focusing on the trailer's list before the Oregon Gathering in July at the expense of the House list, and must make amends before the Lake Casitas trip.

I'll be on the way to Newfoundland for a 2 1/2 weeks vacation. Haven't been there before - can't wait!

Labor Day weekend will be spent cleaning and organizing the Scamp getting ready for Fall camping season here in S. FL. Preparing for 3 day weekend Sept. 10 @ Curry Hammock State Park in Florida Keys. AS melissa said, we take advantage of park vacancies now because the availability is severely limited in the winter months.
We have never been to the nearby Curry Hammock SP and actually discovered it thru a posting here on FGRV submitted by A Canadian member.

hmmm.....hope everyone has a fantastic labour day weekend.....would LOVE to be out camping but instead, i will be at work. funny thing about hospitals---they don't close on weekends and holidays. (not for lack of wishful thinking!!)

Interesting that folks in Florida are just gearing up to start camping season, while up here in BC camping season is starting to wind down. For the Labour Day weekend, we are heading over to the 'Sunshine Coast' (north of Vancouver) to Porpoise Bay Provincial Park - leaving midweek to beat the Friday rush for the ferry. We're looking forward to a relaxing 6 days there.

Cleaning the Casita, washing the outside and waxing the outside. Does anybody have a Belt Sander I can use to get the bugs off the front?????????????

Then we can see how many bugs will be there when we get to Eggfest.

That made me laugh! I understand that line of thinking.

We are going to pick up our "new" Bigfoot 5th wheel. It should be an adventure because the axles have to be flipped before we can tow it. Finding this trailer is putting a crimp on the kitchen remodel we are in the process of doing. BUT when this trailer showed up for sale we couldn't say "no"...even if the timing was horrible! So now our time will have to be divided between trailer and kitchen! I'm even more exhausted contemplating it!

One of my clubs is hosting a charity event on the Labor ("Labour" in Canada!) Day Sunday. We do this EVERY year on that day. For those in the Lower Mainland area of BC, we will be at Aldergrove Lake Regional Park for the Fifty 5-6-7 Club's annual Picnic in the Park!

We often use Solomon Island for a stopping place when we go somewhere in our boat. Never thought about using it for Eggboy. Do you have to have some affiliation with the navy to use that campground?

In Michigan's Upper Peninsula, there is a casino at Bay Mills if you like that sort of thing. Nearby Brimley State Park is a nice CG according to my daughter who just tented there.

Consider a stop at Palms Book State Park to see Kitchi-Ti-Kipi, the Big Spring. You float on a big raft over the spring and look down into the crystal clear, green water and see the big fish way at the bottom. West of Manistique about 6 miles, then north a few.

If you like historical stuff, you might like Fayette SP just a half hour SW of there, on the Garden Peninsula. It's the site of an 1800s iron ore processing facility. Several old buildings with artifacts. You can hit all the state parks you like on a single one-day entry fee... $8 I think.

Buy a couple of pasties (say it with a short 'a', like fast-y) someplace for your meal... they're a lot like a pot pie.

If the weather is nice, at Munising you can take a 2-3 hour boat ride on L. Superior to view the Pictured Rocks Natl Lakeshore; about $50/person I think, but the captain will keep you grinning and the shoreline will keep you snapping photos. Try the sunset cruise for best light. I believe the Apostle Islands in Wisconsin are pretty similar, so don't plan to do both unless you just love the stuff. Folks can rent kayaks at the Apostles and paddle around all day... again, if the weather is nice.

The U.P. has a ton of waterfalls. The largest is Tahquamenon Falls on M-123 NW of Newberry. Another that I really like is Bond Falls... on US2 turn north at Watersmeet, go north on US45 to Paulding, then east about 4 or 5 miles to the falls. Nice trails around the waterfall.

Porcupine Mountains SP is worth stopping at. The east side has a high overlook, the west unit has a wonderful trail along a river with a bridge or two across, so you can walk up one side and down the other. Nearby municipal CG in Ontonagon is right on Lake Superior and affordable.

Once you get to Duluth, be advised that the drive NE from Two Harbors to Grand Portage is chock full of wonderful state parks, cascades, trails, and shoreline. Don't miss the Palisades, a high rock overlook above Lake Superior.
