Lake Superior Circle Tour

My wife and I are planning to leave Grand Marais in June(heading towards Thunder Bay)and will have 5 days to get to S. St Marie, MI. Looking for suggestions for campgrounds and sights to visit. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Lee

Hi Russell. Fort William Historic Park is great. They do have camping on site but its on a hill that can get quite windy and only has electric hook up.

Keckabeka Falls Provincial Park is nearby and has an excellent campground.

We visited both last year and enjoyed ourselves immensely.

A fun thing to do at S. St. Marie is to take the Agawa Canyon train ride.

There is so much to see and do on the circle tour that I could spend a month doing it and still not see it all!

Hi Lee,

We went a bit off season in Sept and found Rainbow Falls closed. Rossport was open and we had a really lovely site where our 13 Scamp perched on a rock on the lake. No service that I remember.

Most of the sites at Rossport Prov Park are near the highway, but this little site would not take a big rig so we really enjoyed having the lake just a step away.

The site number was 19. I think the site beyond 19 was also ok.

My 2005 notes say we ate at Serendipity in Rossport. I have Aguasabon Gorge written down. and even though Rainbow Falls was closed we were able to walk in to see the falls before the ranger closed the gates.

We also stayed at Pancake Bay Provencial Park, no mention of the campground or campsite.

On the UP coming and going from Duluth we try to stay at Bay Furnace just outside of Munising. Once it was full and we had to move on. We stayed in the primitive area at Van Ripper State Park. site 21 $20. Much preferred that to the RV campground there.

One last thing. The last time we came over the bridge we were stuck up there for an hour and twenty minutes. We had plenty of gas in the tank unlike the time we were bridged with an empty tank. So be sure not to have an empty tank thinking you can just wait til you are back in the states to fill up. You may find yourselves coasting into the states.

Have a good trip. We need to repeat the trip with more days attached.

I really enjoyed Sleeping Giant campground. Not cheap though. There are some amethyst mines near by if you like rocks.

We've done it three times. We found the stretch between Wawa and the top of the lake boring because you're driving through the woods without there being much else. The rest was good. Split Rock Lighthouse on the Minnesota shore is interesting as is Gooseberry Falls not too far away.
