Long, Long Trailer

I'm on the site a lot today because I'm taking care of Ginny as she recovers.

Last week we saw the classic oldie, The Long, Long Trailer. After buying a too long trailer they were told their car was inadequate to tow the trailer. After buying a new tow vehicle it looked to be that they also bought a multi-wheeled device that took some of the tongue weight by providing wheels under the ball.

I need to see it again to figure out what it was and how it worked

I am aware of the extra wheel/tire device you are talking about. There is a company that still sells them today but from what I have read they have a number of issues. In the end most heavy tongue weights can be dealt with by using a WDH.

In my scrap book I found this rig from the old days but it is using a WDH. How about that 50's Old's getting a workout!!

A deeper look in my scrap book I found the rig you are talking about Norm. You can clearly see the tongue support wheels.
Getting a blowout on one of those support tires at highway speed could be an issue.

That device was called a dolly. Consisted of two wheels on a 3 foot axle, springs with a coupler and a ball on top. Both my grandparents and parents had one. Impossible to back up. Then somebody invented one with the two wheels side by side and they swiveled so backing up was possible. Made obsolete by WDH.

Pretty interesting trailer life historical artifact, thanks for sharing it. Sure makes one appreciate a trim little easy towing egg doesn’t it? Now I am going to have to track down a copy of the movie, to watch in my Scamp some rainy day.

Edit: I just ordered "The Long, Long Trailer" from Wal-Mart "shipped to store" (free shipping) for $5.29 including tax. A lot more than the $1 I usually pay for a DVD at a Yard Sale, but I wanted it. Oh, and they say two weeks for it to get here! I am not planning a trip until Thanksgiving so maybe I will have it by then.

We received the video 14 years ago when we began our travels. Somehow I was a little offended but laughed none the less. The truth of the matter is I began collecting rocks from all over and still to this day even though we have a short trailer.

Sent from my SCH-I545 using Fiberglass RV mobile app

Was at a large vintage trailer rally on the week-end and there was an old long silver trailer (can't recall the brand but it wasn't an Airstream) that had the extra wheel support on the tongue - sorry I didn't take a photo.
