Does anyone travel with their propane fridge on ? Would it be ok to do so ?

This is a topic that has come up a few times. Some worry that the fridge will blow out and gas will collect in the egg, while others point out the dangers of a car accident with gas freely flowing. I know the ferries here on the coast require it to be shut off and sealed in transit. Don't think it's illegal, but not sure it's advisable either.

I don't think there's any good reason to travel with the gas on.

Typically, RV refrigerators are 3-way, so switching to 12V is the proper mode for transit.

If this is not an option, I'd chill down your box prior to your trip, then add iceblocks (or the like) to your box for the drive.

We've always towed with the gas fridge on and are still here to tell about it. I suppose it could cause a problem but so can many things involving towing.

Plus we like to live on the wild side.

Same here, out Big Foot did blow out on the highway and it just
shuts down w/o incident.

I used to. I don't do it anymore.

I only have a 2-way Fridge, so I do not have a 12volt DC option.

Over the period of several trips I conducted experiments testing the efficiency of running the propane while on the road versus pre-chilling the box and using "blue ice" modules to keep it cold. [b]Both methods maintained 50^oF at the end of a full day on the road. I decided that it wasn't worth the risk if the results were the same.

I link back to those experiments in this post's link while being glad I discontinued running the propane. I had the refrigerator catch fire while starting it at a campsite, due to a gas fitting that broke just before the fire, probably during the trip to the campsite. I was able to put the fire out quickly before there was any significant damage. [b]I would not have been able to even notice that the fridge was burning if it would have happened while driving, and would have lost the whole trailer.

Also, even if it were safe to use while running, you could not pull into a gas station with an open flame, I don't believe (at least, I *hope* not).

I wouldn't travel with mine on.

And when I was a teenager my Mom's Caddie was ran on propane ( l loved to go have it filled. The propane place had super hot guys working there and my moms car was unusual so they would all flock around Had lot's of dates from that car! ) but the car was equipped with saftey valves that auto cut off.

Thank you to everyone for all your thoughts on this subject , i have decided not to use my fridge on propane in transit , for safety reasons .
