Marking the Sparrow's Fall
While I don't normally do book reports, I just finished reading "Marking the Sparrow's Fall", a collection of Wallace Stegner's essays edited by his son Page. If you are interested in the West, particularly the Southwest of the 1950's, this is a great read.
My favorites are "Back Roads River," his tale of traveling down the Colorado River through Glen Canyon, and "Back Roads of the American West" describing 1950 trip from California to the Missouri River. Both describe what is was like to travel the area before paved roads. The book is filled with his insights on the development of the Southwest.
The last piece in the book is one of Stegner's short stories - "Genesis". If you want to feel what cold is like with out actually experiencing it (except in your mind) it is a wonderful story.
