He is a rescue Shelty, 14 months old. He is a companion for my MIL. The lady in the photo is Peggy. Although she doesn't camp much, she has been to the Oregon Gathering 4 times. Bob is the official dog walker.

Wow! What a CUTIE! What is his story? One of the interesting things about rescues is there is always a story!
I have a weakness for merles (as you will see from my profile picture). And I have wonderful memories of the 17 years with our last Corgi. Now if only Pembrokes came in merle...

Unhappy

Tristan likes ladies better than men. He was left alone all day in his previous home and we think he did some crate time. The kids spooked him in his foster home. Tristan slipped his collar this morning and we spent 3 hours looking for him. Something tells me Tristan is going to be interesting!

Consider that exercise for both of you! I'm amazed at people who take rescue dogs. I think all of you deserve a big ole hug and kiss. It takes a big heart to WANT to find a place in your home for an animal that may have been abused and may never be the cute cuddly animal everyone likes. Good for you!

Now I just gotta put in a plug for rescue dogs! I have had many over the years, mostly Aussies, and most I have seen or had were not abused, just neglected. Bailey, my red merle, was left behind after his "mom" divorced and spent two years in a fenced back yard. Bailey is the biggest teddy bear with melting golden/blue eyes. He loves EVERYONE and just lives to be a "good boy". With a little understanding about pack mentality, all my rescues have been "plug and play". In fact, the dog that people assume to be a rescue from abuse is Chynna, my blue merle, who hides behind my knees if people pass us on a walk. I knew when I picked her out of the litter at 6 weeks that she would be a challenge as she was hyper-suspicious of strangers even then. But she is also hyper intelligent and she has been WELL worth the effort!
To anyone thinking of getting a dog, PLEASE check out rescue dogs. They come in for all kinds of reasons, sometimes because their loving owners died. You will be able to be matched for personality, size and temperament and often skip the housetraining/chewing stage of their life.
(Thanks for the soapbox!)

Tristan update after 2 weeks: Daily walks on the leash and putting him in a crate at night (as advised) really helped. He is a lot less "spooky" and really seems to be enjoying life in the forest. We've been watching the Dog Whisperer and trying to do a good job with Tristan. The pose is after being brushed, sans collar and leash!

Tristan just got back from his first camping trip at Lake Alpine. He loves to follow trails and went in the lake Friday. He puts his muzzle under the water and blows bubbles! He has been to the Lake Alpine restaurant on the deck twice and lay under the table thru lunch. He's training to be a pub dog. He's still a little spooky about noises, but much improved.

Hi Bob,

I'm so glad that things are working out well! Tristan looks like a great dog - he just needed a wonderful home with you and Peggy. Thanks so much for the update!
