As we in the U.S. begin this Memorial Day weekend, let us remember those who gave their lives defending those freedoms we take for granted and we most cherish today.
From Memorial Day History:
Quote:
Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states. The South refused to acknowledge the day, honoring their dead on separate days until after World War I (when the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war). It is now celebrated in almost every State on the last Monday in May...

Almost every community in the U.S. has a Memorial Day ceremony. I urge each of you to attend the one in your town.

We should never forget our old and fallen warriors. It's not just the fallen we should honor but all those that have served. Many military personal suffer from near mortal and psychological wounds that have changed their lives.

Thank you Roger, Gary, Patty & Fred ... we owe so much to those who have served our country in either a military or a pacifist capacity, and we should never fail to honor that gift of service. L 'n D

When I was young, I would always be enthralled by my Grandfather's stories of being in the trenches of France during WWI.
My Dad recently participated in an interview project about his participation in WWII, that the local schools conducted and was supported by The American Legion.
The Navy ship I was attached to had run-ins with Saddam Husein in the 1980's.
I have a great respect for the sacrifices of those serving today.

As a Vietnam vet (1969), the most moving experience for me was when I was working in Hillsboro, Oregon at a well-known high tech company. A middle-aged Vietnamese woman came up to me the day before we left for the Memorial Day holiday and said "thank you for what you did for my country". I must have cried for an hour. Very moving experience. Only those who served or from a family of those who have served understand.

Roger,
Thanks so much for the history lesson. I'm ashamed to say I had no idea - thought it originated in WW1. Many of the men in my family have served their country. Dave is a Vietnam vet (Army), our son served in Desert Storm (Marines). On my father's side I think just about every war back to the Revolutionary war is represented. Most came home, a few didn't (2 of my cousins (brothers) were killed in Vietnam). Thanks to all who have served, past present and future. Here's an excerpt from a poem, The Price, by Roger W Hancock, that seems appropriate:
Freedom comes to everyone,
if the price be paid, with blood.
Sacrifice for sake of freedom,
it is not easy and it is not free.
Dave & Kathie
