Memories / Split from Brake Controller Question
Living in California has taught me to lock doors and remove everything, even stuff of no value, from a parked vehicle. Many years ago I parked at a trailhead, someone broke my truck window and took a baby bag (which contained diapers, bottles, but no money or credit cards) and some CDs from the '80s!

I still had an eight-track in the '80's.

I admit to being what they call a "late adopter" when it comes to "new" technology
Believe it or not, I carry a portable power pack in my trailer so I don't run the main battery down playing my...RECORD PLAYER!
Now if I could just figure out how to stop the needle from skipping while I'm going down the road....
....
stayin alive...alive...alive...

My 8 & 12 year olds are fascinated by these examples of "old" technology: floppy disks, cassette tapes, crank windows in cars, record players, punch cards, lots more things that's made me laugh :-)

OFF TOPIC DISCLAIMER:
As you can plainly see, Original Poster Thomas E's question has been answered to his satisfaction: see post # 15
WE MAY NOW RETURN TO OUR TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE:
Me First!
True Story:
A few years ago I invited a 12-year old neighbor kid into the house to call his Mother and he was TOTALLY MYSTIFIED
by the ( still operational) dial telephone you see in the picture.
I had to "teach" him how to use it!

OOOOOH!
And Avocado Green, too!
Love it! Is it still in use?
I really like the leisurely way a rotary phone dials, and I especially like the real "ring".
It seems strange to me that these phones still work in the system, though.
Maybe that's evidence of the perfection of the original technology!

It is one of the extensions on my Land Line. The other two are cordless.
The original technology supplied the power to operate the instrument (carrier) through the same wiring that the voice content (modulated signal) used. This is how these phones continued to operate in electrical power failures; they have their own power supply within the phone system separate from the power the Gas & Electric Companies provide. This capability was mandated by the government in exchange for the original Monopoly that "The Bell System" version of AT&T was granted.
My father worked for New York Telephone (Then part of AT&T, Now Verizon) for 35 years before he retired.

I should not admit this but when I was growing up on an Island we had what were called "party" phone lines you could not get a private line - so no private converstations on the phone. One short ring & a long ring it was for us - two short rings was for the neighbours on one side and two long rings where for the neighbours on the other side. It rang in our house either way. If you needed to use the phone in a hurry you hoped one of the neighbours wasnt using it or you had to cut in and ask them to hang up their call. You could also listen in to everything they said about you!

I worked as an operator for "Ma Bell" for a year right after High School. That was considered a plum job and a respectable third choice for a graduate of St. Mary's Academy who didn't go straight into college or The Convent.
I was there for the transition from the old "cord boards" to electronic consoles. I can still hear the "snick" of those spring held cords as they returned to their positions once disconnected...

If it's a pink one, I'm getting in my KIA SPORTAGE... ...and driving straight down to "Terlingua".
Maybe I can "talk" you out of it!

It was in Indiana, and yes it was pink I quickly found a blue one and changed it. That was way back in the day, You can still come to Terlingua and take my satellite phone home.
