More Vintage Tow ???

We have been using this '76 F150 to tow our 650 lb teardrop, and it pulls it just fine. Now wondering if we can use the truck to pull the Uhaul that weighs around 1300 lb. The truck has a 270 HP 390 cu. in. V8, 4 speed manual trans, power disc brakes, and power steering. Thinking maybe we should upgrade to a similar vintage F250 that has heavier suspension and a 400 or 460 engine. Any thoughts on this??

Bob, I think you need an F350 dually with the diesel option and a weight distributing hitch. And even at that, it may not do well in the mountains.

You should be able to pull that trailer with a 6 cylinder, depending upon how fast you want to accelerate to 65 MPH.

We tow our 3ft Trillium with a '37 Plymouth (with a 360 engine)!!!

Hey Bob I would say Tom is messing with ya. Your truck looks awesome and will will tow the uhaul no problem. I have a 76 T-bird for my Trillium and it tows that like just having luggage in the trunk.

Maybe with helper springs, air bags and a weight distributing hitch, you could tow this one after adding some itty-bitty trailer brakes....
(or you could just pick it up by hand and toss it in the back of the truck and save all that trouble)

My engine only has a 2 barrel carb and single exhaust, maybe I should get an Edelbrock manifold & 4 barrel carb to go with it. Convert to dual exhaust? Now I'm worried about the hitch. I have a Drawtite that is rated for 5000 lb and tongue weight of 500. It's bolted to the truck frame with 6 bolts, they are 1/2" supertanium bolts from Lawson Fastener Co. Those are the bolts that have the marking on the head that looks kind of like a spider. Etrailer has a 10,000 lb rated hitch for only $200, maybe I should get that and use 5/8 supertanium bolts because I have some of those too?

Thinking more about it Bob, I'm not so sure an F350 dually would do it for you. Here is a better match:

I was thinking about one of those Freightliner 4 door 5th wheel haulers as I've drove and worked on a lot of Freightliner tractors and straight trucks, but they typically used the C7 Cat engine, and they turned out to be not a very good engine. If I could find one with a Detroit in it that would be much better!
