Mosquito trap

Modern technology has brought us many benefits, including mosquito traps that cost hundreds of dollars, but sometimes we overlook simple solutions to difficult challenges such as mosquito control. When it comes to controlling pests, research tends to focus on chemicals or concepts that can be patented. Unless someone can make a profit from an idea, the public may never become aware of it.

HOMEMADE MOSQUITO TRAP:

Items needed:

200 ml water
50 grams of brown sugar
1 gram of yeast
2-liter plastic bottle

Or US conversion:
1 cup of water
1/4 cup of brown sugar

HOW:
1. Cut the plastic bottle in half.
2. Mix brown sugar with hot water. Let cool. When cold, pour in the bottom half of the bottle.
3. Add the yeast. No need to mix. It creates carbon dioxide, which attracts mosquitoes.
4. Place the funnel part, upside down, into the other half of the bottle, taping them together if desired.
5. Wrap the bottle with something black, leaving the top uncovered, and place it outside in an area away from your normal gathering area. (Mosquitoes are also drawn to the color black.)

Change the solution every 2 weeks for continuous control.

Wonder if my outdated yeast will rise to the occasion? I do note that David is in AZ. Like they know about mosquito problems. eagerly awaiting Tom's test.

I'm sure most folks know this, but the reason I take a small portable fan when I camp, is mosquitos don't fly in the wind... or perhaps can't land. If I'm outside under the awning and mosquitoes are flying a small fan moves them along to the next campsite. Seems to work well for me. YMMV

I made one of the bottle traps last summer and tried it out at the height of the mosquito season - didn't catch very many at all. If I remember correctly, it caught more little fruit-flys than anything else.

What did work fairly well was a trap made out of a cheap box fan to which I fastened some mosquito netting, (actually tulle, in this case). The wind blows the mosquitoes into the netting where they are captured because they are unable to fly against the strong wind. The frame for the netting is made out of very thin hard board that I bolted to the fan. This first attempt needs to have the corners of the frame rounded because it tears into the netting; also, on my next attempt I think I'll try hook and loop tape or maybe magnetic tape instead of duct tape, which didn't hold very well.

Another method is to eat a "LOT" of garlic............LOL
