From Photo Below of an In Progress Painting I am working on, Name the Bird, the National Park the bird was photographed (I know it is a painting). What is being depicted on the far right on the painting?

This will be a way I can tell if I am getting a somewhat correct likeness of the bird, place & object. Thanks.

Remember, it is an In Progress Piece.

Hi Adrian
From the posture and colouring of the bird, it would be a male American Krestrel or Sparrow Hawk. The location would be somewhere in the Great American desert region, possibly Arizona. Not having been there, I can't do better. maybe someone who lives closer or has vivited the area, can name the park.
Here too, is an in-progress picture of a basswood carving of your bird that I am working on. I don't have the legs and feet done and it is yet to be painted but should go well with your finished painting.
Hope to see your finished piece.
Jim

OK! Here's mine.
It's a long necked, three stringed, diatonically fretted, instrument made from a bamboo salad bowl, a piece of cherry, and a bunch of old banjo and guitar parts.
I need a name for it.

Jim, right on. The American Krestrel, once called or some times called a Sparrow Hawk.

The American Kestrel is the smallest falcon in North America—about the size of an American Robin. Like all raptors, the American Kestrel is sexually dimorphic, although there is some overlap within the species. The female ranges in length from 23 to 28 centimeters (9-11 inches) with a wingspan of 53–61 centimeters (21–24 inches) and weighs an average of 120 grams (4.2 ounces). The length of the male varies between 20–25 centimeters (8–10 inches) with a wingspan ranging from 51–56 centimeters (20–22 inches) and weighing an average of 111 grams (3.9 ounces). These subtle differences are often difficult to discern in the field.
The coloration of the feathers, however, greatly varies between the sexes. Males have blue-grey secondary feathers on their wings, while the undersides are white with black barring. The back of the female American Kestrel is rufous with dark brown barring. The wings exhibit similar coloration and patterning to the back. The tail of the female is noticeably different from the male, being rufous in color with numerous narrow dark brown or black bars. The kestrel has a sharp, hooked bill and large, talon-tipped feet that are ideal for hunting. The American Kestrel is the only North American falcon to habitually hover with rapid wing beats, keeping its head motionless while scanning the ground for prey. The kestrel commonly perches along fences and powerlines. They hunt large insects, bats, mice, birds and small reptiles.

Your carving, no make that sculpture of an American Kestrel is GREAT!
It shoud really knock socks off once painted, etc.

What a neat looking instrument! Great job on it too.

Now for a name , how about Bamjo-qinqin Lute.

The ruan (pinyin: ruǎn) is a Chinese plucked string instrument. It is a lute with a fretted neck, a circular body, and four strings. But the qinqin (pinyin: qínqín) is a plucked Chinese lute originally with a wooden body, a slender fretted neck, and three strings. Its body can be either round, hexagonal (with rounded sides), or octagonal. Often only two strings were used, as in certain regional silk-and-bamboo ensembles. In its hexagonal form (with rounded sides) it is also referred to as meihuaqin (literally "plum blossom instrument").

This instrument is often played by musicians who like to dance. Although this instrument is hard to play while dancing, a true expert will play it with perfection.[citation needed]

The qinqin is particularly popular in southern China: in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau. A similar instrument, the two-stringed đàn sến, has been adapted from the qinqin for use in the traditional music of southern Vietnam.

It is definitely a Bamjo-qinqin Lute or maybe just a Bamjo-qin.

for sharing & playing Name That.

I'm still working on a name for the string instrument.
The other bird is perched like a woodpecker...so, I think it is a Gila woodpecker

James,
For the sake of simplicity, since it's made from banjo & guitar parts, I would dub it a Bantar. Easy to say & easy to spell!

Marv, you are pretty good at this, yes a Gila Woodpecker.

Here is another Gila Woodpecker we saw on the same day at Saguaro National Park.

And one my daughter took in her back yard. Gila Woodpecker female 5-14-08 drinking from a hummingbird feeder.

Sandra, [b]Bantar does have a nice ring to it & is easy to say & easy to spell!
