Greetings from Northern Wisconsin where winter has arrived...slightly.
Plan to head to the beautiful West sometime in April and return in late June. Planning out trip now and would appreciate some input on overnight stays in Nevada. Perhaps National Forest.

Not sure how one makes reservations for some of the National Parks we plan to visit. Don't like to think about reservation dates to keep if one is enjoying where they happen to be. Guess it works out reading some of the posts you all have made. Appreciate any input on the National Forests. Plan to get the new National Park Guide next week when it gets of the press. Thanks for any info.

Lorraine,

Though you asked about national forests, I thought I would urge you to try Great Basin National Park, in Nevada just west of the Utah border on US 50---billed as America's Loneliest Highway. Just returned from a trip into those parts and southern Utah and thought Great Basin was extremely nice. It's not as heavily populated as the better known parks are, but camping is nice. Also, there is a cave in the park that is well worth your while to visit. Ranger conducted tours are good.

In Nevada, the mountain ranges run north-to-south with basins in between often containing dry lakes or salt flats. The locals talk about traveling "across the grain" (east-west) and "with the grain" (north-south).

Art...thanks for the info. Made note of the park and just might give it a look. Grateful for any suggestions we get. That's big country out there compared to where we live in northern WI. thanks again and happy travels to you.

Lorraine,
if you are going in April the north part of Nevada can still be cold and snow at the highter elevations at that time of the year. The southern part of Nevada and Utah can be nice, just check the weather before you go.

RE: could be cold still in the high country.

Re: Reservations, I have yet to do reservations for a park or any place when traveling & vacationing. Only execptions were when we planned on meeting halfway between North Dakota & southern New Mexico to pick up our Scamp from my son who picked it up at the factory for us. We make reservations at a private campground in Loveland, CO. We made reservations when my son & family were planning on being in San Diego area last spring, but had to cancel them when their plans fell apart. We have gone all over the country camping, mainly in the western US and Canada & some in the mid-west as well. Never had a problem, except in California in '06 but lucked into a nice site anyway. Some of the state parks try to make it hard on those of us who like first come first served it seems, but still can do it. Nat'l parks are easier to do without reservations still.

Traveling in the west with a TT or motor home since 1986.

Report of our trip to Yellowstone this August: http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseacti...id/23076903.cfm
