New tow vehicle advice sought

I tried my brother-in-law's Lotus as a tow vehicle. The car weighs 1600 pounds and the loaded Scamp about 1900. What do you think? ;-)


Can safety be ignored when a rig looks this cool?

PS. Notice the jacks are down on the Scamp.

It looks safe..............in the driveway.

Here's my take: Travel trailers are cool. Sport cars are cool. Putting the two together reduces the cool factor on both.

Well, maybe a teardrop trailer painted to match.

John, I like it a lot, assuming it could be connected correctly and safely.

Most of us know the best TV's have.....

a low center of gravity
high performance brakes and suspension
precise steering
sticky performance tires

When you review some of the more specialized towing sites you can see how well some of the performance based sports based vehicles take on the roll as TV's. Some folks get it, others do not. It is the way it is.

Hi: John Linck... There's an AS dealer near here that would fix you up a hitch!!! There are those on several forums that say I'm over the limit for our tow truck. What do you think Eh?

Minimalist.... you have my attention and curiosity.

Since we know in most cases that some sports car and some TT mate well together in so many ways why would you consider it "not so cool", thnxs for your thoughts.

PS, There was a high end Jag sport sedan connected to a very large TT at the Toronto RV show a few years back. I asked the highly respected towing specialist about it. He replied that it was his own rig and that it was the best driving, best handling rig he had ever driven........ and over the past 40 years he had driven 1,000's.

There are many lot of long discussions back and forth about tow vehicle combos that can be searched out in this forum. Lets just keep this thread as it was meant to be 'tongue in cheek'.

Here is a picture of mine, a Porsche 924 with travel trailer, I actually got the idea from my kids toys made by Majorette in France similar to Hot Wheels. (I just can't figure out how to load the pic?)

My brother-in-law assures me there is no way to attach a hitch to his Lotus Elise. Simply not enough structure on the rear. Plus it only has a 4 banger. Like most good fantasies, not really meant to come true. Darn.

Nice little car, but it weighs 1984pounds curb weight. With that Toyota engine you might be overloading the poor thing.
Go for an original Europa.(1650#) It is a REAL Lotus and a lot lighter, leaving room for more trailer!



By going even lighter (950#) we left even more for trailer weight with the following combination.... PLUS!! It is a SuBARu which is a very popular and proven make for towing Fiberglass trailers...

NATURALLY... in EUROPE they have even more sensible standards!
(All kidding aside, I actually once saw an actual motorhome made from one of these little Bimmers.)
