Newfoundland
We finished the music festival at Norris Point. Absolutely great.
Planned to head to Fogo but woke to snow at other Dame Provincial Park so we headed 150 miles South to Harbour Breton. There are no other towns on the road until you get to the end.
Fogo is now scheduled for Monday.

Did you take the ferry out of Portland or drive up through New Brunswick? We're so jealous. Newfoundland is at the top of our list when Nancy retires in a couple of years. Here's wishing you good weather and safe travels.

Brian, We have looked into the Portland Ferry. First it doesn't save much in time, if anything, Second you miss NB, especially Hopewell Rocks. Third, it's expensive.

Wow! You weren't kidding. Two adults and TV and camper start at about $500 one way. I'd much rather camp and enjoy NB. We've been up the reversing falls but have never been to Hopewell Rocks. The list keeps getting longer.

Norm, Thanks for starting this thread and reporting on the major points of your trip - keep it coming. We are in the planning stages of our trip and the official 2014 guide "Lost and Found" is nearby. I am following your progress on the map. I also think driving up via New Brunswick and Nova Scotia is the way to go and take the shorter ferry to Port aux Basques. Hopewell Rocks are not to be missed.
Safe travels!

We just visited Harbour Breton. Though there are many pitchman get spots along the 120 mile road we decided to stay in the nicest own campground right near the beach, only 5 sites and $20 a night for service and $10 for underlined. We have visited all the little outposts in the area. Being far out it is closer to old NL. People are more isolated and more co-defendant and as friendly as can be. The big difference is fish farming seems to be the biggest sources of income. Much up and down driving on severely steep roads. Had to only downshift to 2nd once, mostly 4th and a little 3rd.
Virtually no traffic and I love it. The Vistas are wonderful in every direction. On one really big moose so far.
From here it's Fogo on Monday.

Norm, you must be using Newfoundlander speak. What does " many pitchman get spots" mean? Also " $10 for underlined"??????????

Thanks for catching the errors. The use of Swift key can get you in trouble on a smart phone.
From here it's Fogo on Monday. Pitchman should read 'many pit camping spots' and ' decided to stay in the nice town campground' ... and $10 for un-serviced sites.Being far out is closer to old NL.
Thanks again

Harvey,
It was cold the beginning of last week, We barely saw 40. Since than it's been in the 50s and has reached 60. Definitely the coldest spring I can remember. I will not be surprised to see this year also be cold.

Made it To Fogo Island. Everything and more. Today from one vantage point I counted 91 icebergs., 91 is not a typo.
We plan to spend a week. The ferry round trip is priced at $20.35 for two seniors with CRV and Scamp.
Most tourists come in the summer, lucky us.

Travel Thought
Of course we like the dramatic, famous travel spots, views that shock your eye, like Yellowstone or the Grand Canyon. We have done them all but what we like best is meeting the people and understanding their lives, their culture.
The other day we were taking a hike out to see the icebergs and ran into a local author who recited one of his poems about the irish coming to and settling Newfoundland. Since we love to understand these little outport towns we bought his books. These places have only changed from their ultra rural nature since our young adulthood.
It's hard to imagine that until icebreakers, relatively recently, these communities would be isolated from early winter when the bays froze until early spring when supply boats could again return. This fosters a special kind of person, families and community.
You see it in their music, their language and their kindness to people like us.
Newfoundland is something not to be missed before our modern world makes it no more.

Brimstone Head.
We're camped in the shadow of Brimstone Head at the Lions Club Campground (in Aug there's a very good music festival here).
The head is one of the four corners of the world. On a rather warm day in Fogo, 68 F, though very blustery we climbed the Head. Spectacular views in every direction.
The first is the Head. The second the village of Fogo. The 3rd two 71 year old hikers.

Ron, it was the warmest day we've had since we left Florida. It was 68 F but the wind was really blowing. Truly blow me down gusts.
