"Heavy snow melt, moist soil, and North Dakota's peculiar geography combined over the weekend to turn the roads and fields around Fargo into a seemingly giant shallow ocean. Called overland flooding, it creates bizarrely apocalyptic scenes like this.

The Red River crested on Saturday night to the fourth highest level in history, sending water into the area around the cities of Fargo, North Dakota and its neighbor Moorhead, Minnesota. Because of the extreme flatness of this valley area, the water traveled mostly unimpeded at a slow, shallow rate across the empty plains."

Seems like Fargo gets nailed pretty good about every other year. We have members in Fargo. Hope they're all safe and dry.

Fargo/Moorhead, actually the whole valley, is an amazing, self-reliant and resiliant community. My hat's off to all those folks who deal with nature's consequences almost every spring, and do it so well, together.
The Fargo flooding website indicates that FM may have escaped the worst, but reminds volunteers that others down river may still need help.
I think the whole river valley community, and the way they work together, is inspiring.
And I truly hope they all "dodge the river bullet" this year, and hope our members, as Donna said, are safe and dry...

How in the heck do you clear a highway full of water with a snow plow?

some of the photos are sure something, like driving across an ocean. It would be an unnerving drive in a compact car low with low ground clearance.

Why is this highway not closed? I heard a guy lost his way and went into the ditch and drowned. It's flooded people stay home and make sure your house is safe.

That is insane! Like Rick just posted, I can't believe the road was open when that youtube video was taken...

I was planning to take I-29 next month.... when do they expect the flood waters to drop?

Might have to follow 35 instead....

That section of I29 is now open. We have had 3 consecutive heavy snow winters.
