LOL that brings back funny memories. In the Alpine ski word the races in North America are constructed ahead of time and maintained during the races all by volunteers, including most of the officials on course. Those volunteers pay for their own transportation to where the race is being held (many coming in from around the world) and most of their own meals etc during the couple of weeks they help put the race on. No payment is expected other than a free drink at the end of the day paid for by the races organizing committee.

You can imagine what happened when the Olympics were held in Utah! The local alpine course works know that the local practices were not going to go over well with all the experienced volunteers they needed to run the event coming from outside of Utah so they decided to try and discreetly have the traditional "beer tent" hidden away in a back room of a hotel. On the second day they all got busted! The experience for most present who had never been busted by the law for anything in their life times before continues today to be the source of great laughs over a beer at the end of subsequent events

Ended up with a big push comes to shove - do you want to hold your planned Olympic ski race or uphold your drinking policies Well you know which way it went.

Utah has really liberalized its drinking policies since I was a child there. In order to buy a bottle of liquor from one of the state-operated liquor stores, you used to have to obtain, (and pay for), a government issued "liquor license." This meant you had to go to a government employee and make it known that you were a drinker - obviously meant to discourage any who didn't want their friends and neighbors from finding our about it. They still have the state stores, but the liquor license is no longer required. I understand that in some of the resort cities it's now possible to even have a cocktail with your dinner - something that used to be illegal.
