Overnight in Oregon

I'm taking my trailer for a ride up (north) to Washington State. Any ideas on where to stop for the night near Roseburg, Oregon ?

7 Feathers Casino Canyonville Oregon exit 99 is 25 miles south of Roseburg. Beautiful campground $$ and plenty of free overnight dry camping. I think a reservation would be helpful in the campground but unnecessary for the free overnight parking.

I second Jack's recommendation of 7 Feathers Casino. If you just want to overnight with no hookups the dry area is on the right side of I-5 just north of the Casino, easy off and easy on. There is a McDonald's, yummy fries, with in walking distance also.

The RV park is across the highway after going under it, when heading north. I've never stayed at the RV park and hear it is just wonderful. For an overnighter I think it's way too expensive unless you really need hookups. I've only overnighted through the years and have never even driven through the RV park.

There are lots of rest areas along I-5 any one will do and they're free. We've slept in many.

thanks for the Harvest Hosts web site...this looks great...and what a savings in overnight campground costs...plus added safety factor for us single gals who want to boondock.

Harvest Host sells it's program to participating wineries on the basis that campers will spend money in the tasting rooms. If that's something you usually do, it could be a savings.

But, the winery my ex is affiliated with in Chelan, WA, turned them down several times because they didn't see enough business being generated for the space, facilities, services, liability, and potential for clean-up, involved. Several Columbia Valley AVA winery members reported less than 25% sales participation and were going to discontinue the service after this summer if it didn't improve.

Harvest Hosts - i haven't tried it but love the idea of buying some produce, wine etc and camping in a nice spot. I see that RV's have to be self contained so apart from a parking space I don't think the hosts have to provide anything. You would think they would already have liability covered for all of their other visitors but maybe overnights are different.

Judy brought up this general topic (of offering overnight parking to RV's) at a dinner we had with both the General Manager and the Primary Owner of a Lake Chelan AVA winery, just this last month, and some of the issues cited included: Having guests on the property overnight requires additional insurance, having guests requires that a company rep to be available overnight, 24/7 in and out access, trash cans that get overfilled or missed all together, and a little problem at a Columbia Valley AVA winery, when an overeager motorhome driver couldn't wait for the morning opening of the gate and made his own road kinda left a bad impression.

Wildlife safari just south of Roseburg has a boondock RV parking area for a few dollars. The village and giftshop are free to look around if you don't want to pay for the drive through the park itself. Wildlife Safari - Winston Oregon

I'm sorry to hear of the poor experience with Harvest Hosts. We went to 3 wineries in the Lodi, CA area and were greeted with sincere hospitality and, since we were on a self-led wine-tasting tour, were very happy to purchase excellent wine from each vintner. The quiet atmosphere of camping right next to the vineyard, visiting with the host first-hand and having no obnoxious campers around us were all pluses in our book. As respectful campers we are looking forward to Harvest Host stays in the future and certainly hope that the "hosts" feel duly compensated.

Harvest Hosts is a welcome alternative to expensive RV parks, as well as no frills Walmart and casino-type camping. We continue to love camping in natural settings in state and national parks as well as BLM camping. There seem to be fewer and fewer small, family run campgrounds, but many of those have provided pleasant camping as well.

Here in California, camping on the coast is pricey and camping at the most popular wine counties of Napa and Sonoma are non-existant (even with Harvest Host). Lodging costs there are astronomical.

We think Harvest Hosts provides an excellent source of "niche-camping".

I don't think I suggested a "Poor Experience" with Harvest Hosts. I just mentioned why it wasn't as popular an idea as it might be with some estate wineries.

As you mentioned, it has value, especially for those into wine tasting touring, as a opportunity for a place to stay.
