thank you Gina!!! i forgot the manly stuff to show visitors that i am really not alone!
i put mens slippers next to my bed and several mens shirts in the bathroom of my last house. it really helped out when i had a lot of work done on the house by a lot of contractors i did not want to know any better! thanks for the reminder!

just got a 17' casita and found that the trip home involved shopping for the basics each day. can someone suggest the kind of stove top to replace the bad one in mine? what kind of grill is best? i like my meat broiled and do not always buy boneless so a foreman grill isn't enuf.

have taken along lots of quarters for drink machines and laundry machines. other than that my flashlight is the most important thing. alice

It's 17 ft 6 in,and 3 feet wide and propelled with two paddles. It was built in 84 .Same year as the boler,and still gets about the same number of comments. As an OLD guy it's still light enough that I can still go wilderness paddling. Plan to do 10days on a northern Ontario river this summer.After Emily of course. Only at my age I no longer lead th trip but let my son do that. When you become an OLD GEEZER you just have to slowdown a little.

Lightning strikes on someone . . . can be unpleasant ! How did the radio help?? Simply turn on the am, find a spot on the dial between two stations which picks up no broadcast, turn up the volume, and wait. If lightning strikes anywhere up to ten miles away, you will hear it crackle on the radio. Gives you time to make it back to the dock.

I bring my washer and dryer too. Well, they work ONLY in the southwest.

They are 5 gallon containers. One for "whites" and one for "colored clothes". Put your dirty clothes in them each night, with some water and soap, put the lid on and let the slosh around while driving.

That night at the campground, we rinse them and put them on the "air dryer". Normally, by morning they are dry. If not, I string bungy cords in the camper and the almost dry clothes on them. The heat in the camper when we are out "touring", will dry them all.

This will not work in Florida (too humid) or any place that isn't HOT.

We do the wash every night, maximum every other night - 2 days worth of clothes max because they need "sloshing" room.

The nice thing about the 5 gallon containers is that when we pull in for the night, we set the containers outside the door. Then, they become seats when you put a foam pad on them.

Well, I've gone from backpacking, to kayak camping, to VW Camper Van, to my current 17' Escape. In each transition, a little more luxury has crept in.

I still sleep in my old mummy bag (with a sheet to cover the upholstery) but I've graduated to a pillow instead of folded up extra clothes.
My pots and pans are still the titanium set from kayaking, but I got a 2 person set of nice plastic dishes, cups, placemats and napkins (since I now have an actual dinette!).
I figure my clothes can stay dirty until it's raining and I'm camping someplace with a laundromat .
I love having a bathroom - but the exterior shower will probably just hose down the dogs and serve as emergency cleanup for me (so many campground have showers - and, if I'm boondocking, the dogs don't really care how I smell )
I've gone from a little folding chair that used my thermorest mattress to a full camp-chair with arm rests and a foot rest

The absolute best thing is ICE - gotta have ice for that late afternoon gin/tonic

I'm still new to my trailer - so I'm sure my list will waffle around as I figure out what really works - last year, 1/2 of the cupboards were empty. I suppose it will be somewhat self-limited by how much stuff I want to pack in and then pack pack out for those big 'cleanout' times.

A fishing rod or two. Ok, four or five. A shotgun and a couple of cases of shells just in case a Sporting Clays course is nearby. A camera with way too many lens and and attachments. A few tennis balls for the mutt to chase and chew on. Several cans of Beanie Wennies and a spoon to eat them with. The rest of the stuff in the trailer is just junk that I can somehow make do without.

What marvelous ideas! Jan, I never thought of doing laundry that way but now that you mention it, of course it makes perfect sense! What a great idea about the sloshing tubs.

Anne, I hear you about the ice. It's an absolute must-have for me and I have a seperate cooler for my ice that will keep much of it frozen for almost 3 days. I'll also pre-freeze small milk jugs with water. There's usually still a cold block by day three, and when I bring out the icy lemonade or iced tea, I'll often get surprised looks from other boondovkers who wonder where the heck I got ice in the middle of no-where. It helps to have a fridge that runs on propane, too.

The old backer way is to use a green garbage bag. Add a gallon of warm water, a tablespoon of detergent and bounce it on the ground for a few minutes. Empty into hole away from campsite add clean rinse water and repeat. A good bag will last several washings and takes up almost no space with your gear. After your done with it haul out your old rubbish and place in camp bearproof litter container.
