I agree 100% . Floyd made some very good suggestions and keen observations , which I have taken to heart .
Towing a trailer takes an additional toll on any vehicle and requires increased vehicle maintenance.
Fixing your vehicle when something goes wrong or breaks does not fit my definition of preventive maintenance.
As my vehicles get older the failure rate increase and I for one make allowances for this fact.

Floyd,
That all seems pretty clear, but do we add or subtract the amount of change in our pockets?

A Ford MoCo engineer said cars would get phenomenal gas mileage if consumers didn't insist on weighty options, such as AC and electric windows (each window needs its own motor). Hence, we could lighten the tow vehicle load not only with diet and exercise, but also by getting rid of those and other heavy options and replace the window glass with kitchen plastic wrap. I prefer Glad Press 'n Seal. Need fresh air? Peel back the wrap a bit. Raining? Smooth it down well.

So if I stop for lunch along the highway, I can subtract 5 pounds from the weight of the trailer (food and beverage) but then I need to add the same 5 pounds to the tow vehicle load.
Should I speed up or slow down upon resuming my journey? (I'm math challenged.)

Hitch too light? swaying? Go to the bathroom after eating, and transfer the weight to the holding tank. It should handle better, and you will feel better.
This thread would fit in the jokes and tall tales section, were we not so deadly serious.

If you carry electronic devices such as laptop computers, tablet computers, smart phones, Remove all unneeded applications and associated data to reduce weight. All those "1"s weigh more than "0"s.

Just to be sure Byron, you'd have to zero-fill the drive. :

I'm not sure that altitude makes for a 30% reduction in Capacity, but attitude makes the driver less fun to be with ! ! David in Fresno and Sonora : just returned from 5,000 mi in Canada ( July) and Hot August Nights in Reno and Speed Week at Bonneville Salt Flats.(today )

Check Trailer Life Sept, 2017 for towing. It may help in what to tow with.
