Planning trip, fires not helping
Hi everyone :wave
Our big trip is coming up but as of yet I have made no firm plans where to head. I usually enjoy camping through the Alberta/BC rockies and through southern BC and the islands. Due to the forest fire situation I've been hesitant to make firm plans as the situation seems to be changing daily.
Any ideas or suggestions into our trip planning would be most welcome. We will be on the road for about 14 days give or take 2 days, and I am willing to go new places and see new things. We could go into other provinces or the states. I don't like driving more than 5 hours in a day if I can help it. Any thoughts?

Planning trip, fires not helping
Lainey,
I have the same problem planning a three or four week trip in September. Hundreds of fires are still burning and many more starting every day, 320 in BC at last count. I can't begin to make any real plans. I just remember how disappointed I was that smoke from fires hundreds of miles away obscured the view of the Alaska Range last August.
I was thinking about going up to Glacier Park and then on to Cranbrook, Kamloops, Prince George, and Mackenzie but that route is not looking good. An alternate trip idea was to head north to the Hay River/Yellowknife area and was wondering if fires were a problem along Highway 35. Does anyone know what the situation is up that way or know of a good web site for fire info in Canada? I have found sites on individual fires but none that give the overall picture.

US wildland fire info
http://www.nifc.gov/information.html
This is where to find wildland fire info for the US.
http://www.ciffc.ca/
http://www.nofc.forestry.ca/index_e.html
I think these two are the same sort of thing for Canada.
The only problem you should have is some road closures or smoke in the air. We have terrible smoke up here in the summers. But luckily it was pretty rainy this summer.
be safe and have fun.

Trip to BC
:wave
Hi Lainey,
Hosmer Bc isn't a big place, and is nestled in the bottom of a beautiful valley, If you are in the neighborhood of Canal Flats, Cranbrook or Fernie, Chas can't be too hard to find, and 'tho I may be speaking out of turn, but I bet he knows the area well enough to tell you about some of the local sights that you wouldn't want to miss.

Well, for sure I'll have to stop on by and say Hi :wave to Ches if we end up that way.
On another note, what about going into the states, maybe Yellowstone? Is there much to see and do along the way (for a 5 year old)?

Hi Lainey.
Last summer, coming back a trip from Montreal QC to Victoria BC, I went down to Yellowstone Park, Mount Rushmore and South Dakota Bad Lands. These are spectacular and I highly recommend these visits. Coming out from Yellowstone Park at Cooke city,on north east I followed route 212 up to the scenic road to Cody (probably route 296), then on 16. Have a look at this map

The Bad Lands , by route 240 are wonderful.
You may have a preview of these areas on short films at address

of my website.
Take a look too at this site
