Please be careful!

I know there are some members that spend time camping and fly fishing in the Kern River Canyon above Kernville Ca.
It's GONE! Six homes were burned to the ground in River Kern.
By tomorrow I think all the campgrounds will also be burned to the ground in the Kern Canyon.
A fire started just above Kernville on Monday afternoon. It is burning on both sides of the canyon.
This morning it had burned over 15000 acres. By tomorrow morning it will undoubtedly over 20000 acres with no containment in sight.
As of today it has burned over half way the Sherman Mt. Road.
The fire was human caused.
We had a very wet winter in California so it's a firestorm waiting to happen.
Where ever you camp , please be fire safe.
John

I was driving into the interior of BC yesterday and on all the overhead signage in bold yellow lettering "Camp Fire Ban in Effect".....but yet people are still careless

Take care of where ya live and leave it better then when you arrived.

Perry, this just makes me sick. The area was still trying to recover from the huge 2002 McNalley fire in addition to the smaller fires of the last few years. We love that area have spent lots of time there, we also spend time on the eastern side in the Troy/Monache area.

I have driven through every one of those campgrounds, dreaming of a time I could get away to them. I never did..

and now, I won't.

Sigh.

Gina, if you ever get down this way you can still enjoy most of the campgrounds.
The steep sides of the Kern Canyon are all burned off.
The Kern River is a natural fire break on the west side of the campgrounds and Mountain Highway 99 is on the east side.
The campgrounds suffered only minimal damage.
Thankfully, we did not have the normal high afternoon winds for the last several days so the FS could stop the fire before it hit the tall timber.
We were very lucky the fire was contained at about 16500 acres.
