Power Whittling

I've looked at some of our member's whittling projects with great interest and high regard. Here's a variation of them that I saw last weekend at the Chainsaw Sculpture Championships held in Reedsport, Oregon. This year's theme was life on the farm. Contestants have 3 1/2 days to carve a sculpture from a single block of western redcedar or Sitka spruce. The results are truly incredible!

I've seen some pretty fantastic chain saw carving in Oregon and Washington. It seems to be a pretty common thing. It's a lot eaiser to sell large carvings than small ones, just like it's a lot easier to sell large RVs than small ones.

P.S. I don't believe there is such a thing as "Power Whittling".

At least not according to any definition I know of. Note one of the operating factors, "a piece of wood held in the hand". Chain saw carving and holding the piece of wood being, ahh NOPE.

Yup.

Careful, the visual picture of trying to hold a piece of wood in one hand and a chain saw in the other might be a bit distrubing.

I do have to admit there's pretty fine chain carving around.

Those are by far the best chainsaw carvings I have ever seen---

Since my artistic skills don't go beyond being able to draw a stick figure, I really admire what others can do. Gee, I remember as a girl scout back in the prehistoric era trying to whittle a sharp point with my girl scout knife. Never was very good at it. Bet they don't even allow girl scouts to have knives anymore.
