I've had far too much theft to ever allow any unwanted visitors on my property.

Interestingly, the theft stopped when I started buying military vehicles and leaving them in the driveway.

No need to get it in writing- actions speak louder than words. Have as I said already had a few incidents involving various neighbours children with no ramifications. Actually while I was driving to the Bandon meet one of those money hungry lawyers (along with the help of a couple of others) took 3 of their billable hours to look after a problem they had noted on my property in order to prevent any serious water damage from happening to my home. I havent got a bill from any of them They saved me the 10 hour drive home to look after it myself & the head ache of having to deal with an insurance company to get the damage fixed had it been left as was. I am told that one money hungry lawyer decided to stick their hand down into an electrical box filled with water in an attempt to fix the problem I have a pretty good hunch that had they hurt themselves doing it they would have been to embarrassed to have sued me for their own stupidity.

One of the things I love about my current neighborhood is it is one that people actually take the time to get to know the names of their neighbors and their children. Many hold keys to each others homes & the alarm codes, even though they may not be someone they socialize with (or even actually like on a personal level). I have lived in neighbourhoods where no one even knows your name and I much prefer the current situation. Funny enough the current neighborhood also has a *very low* theft rate - way lower than the previous neighbourhood, even though it has a lot more expensive unsecured toys and cars sitting around.

As far as unwanted visitors go I guess the difference is I do not view people or children from my neighourhood as unwanted. There is plenty of research that shows that people are far less likely to steal from someone they know verses someone they don't. I work in sports with youth and cant tell you how many youth I have had a preconceived notion or had been told ahead of time that they were a bit of a bad apple only to discover once I took the time to get to know them a bit better that they were actually pretty nice kids. Kids entering their troubled teen years remember well who gave them a drink or a popsicle on a hot day & let them play in their yard vs those who's only contact they ever had with was to be yelled at. I know I do.

We all have different levels of what we are comfortable about risking and not risking. For me property is just that, property and it has a dollar value and it can be replaced but the social aspect of life is not something you can put a dollar value on and not so easy to replace once gone.

I would have to make sure they weren't throwing cigarette butts though.

I dont think I would have an issue as long as they werent too noisy, didnt leave trash behind and were polite. I think some cookies and cold drinks are a good idea. Some kids today have no adults to talk, so starting a dialogue is a good idea. Do you have odd jobs that need done? Perhaps they would do some work for you in return for a few dollars or a meal.

Yeah, my husband poop in the creek. I said their not the only thing that poohs in it. It's Nordic Fest this weekend and since we are house is on the "Troll Walk" known as the Pop Bottling Factory (God only knows what it was before) so this will mean a lot of gawkers.

I had a job in the inner city dealing with the worst kind of people. (they liked to use bullets to answer the door)
After doing that for so long you start to think that those people are the majority. You end up forgetting that there are so many wonderful people out there.

I too lived and worked in the inner city. My company jobbing truck was broken into and the tools stolen , I stared down the barrel of a pistol on several occasions . I had my head split open with a tire iron , rewired a brothel, and had to be escorted to my vehicle by armed guards many times . I worked in Minnesota's maximum security prison for men and Minnesota's prison for women It gets hard to remember that not everyone is a criminal , not all teenagers are gang bangers and not all minorities are criminals . I should be more understanding of peoples personal experiences so to you I apologize

I know exactly how you feel.
Tire iron? Ouch.
My coworker was pulled from his truck and beaten with a pipe.
I was a bit luckier and took some lead in the knee.

I think the scariest encounter I had was finding an 8' alligator loose in a basement of a vacant building.
