Purchasing from a distance

Hi All:

I am hoping to buy a FG trailer here shortly. Oh am I excited!!

Here's my question. I am in Montana and there isnt much for sale out here. So it's likely I will but a camper somewhere in the western US. I am thinking I would give a deposit to the buyer through paypal so that they will hold the camper till I get there to pick it up.

Any suggestions about this - or should I be doing something else?

Thanks, Todd

Todd, first thing is to watch out for scams, mainly on craigslist, as fiberglass campers seem to be a favorite item of the scammers. If the ad has a phone number then most likely it is legit. Another issue is based on opinions, the sellers idea of a perfect condition trailer may not be the same as yours. I know from experience that pictures don't show everything, so use caution there. Be patient, and good luck in your search.

Thanks - I appreciate your help. Do you think its OK to send a deposit via paypal? Say $200-$300 for a $4K camper? This is with the assumption that the seller would hold it till I can get there.

I purchase all 3 of my fiberglass trailers across the country. I knew by speaking to the other persons on the phone they were genuine. Many picturesand questions were exchanged and all the sellers were willing to hold it until I had a chance to get them I'm in Pa, the first trailer was in Grants Pass, Oregon, the 2ndI went to Kalispell, Montana. Good luck! All the trailers I bought from this siteor fiberglassrvforsale.

The only problem with sending a deposit before is what if the condition is not as described - pictures can be deceiving and some folks believe their trailers are in great condition when the buyer may disagree.
I have bought a trailer that the seller held while I drove 6 hours (no deposit)and another I was just getting in the car after just speaking to the seller (who assured me they would hold it) and drive 3 hours and he called right back to say someone closer was coming to buy it.
A lot depends on the seller and this is a busy time of year for selling, they will get lots of calls if lower priced.
Good luck.

The basic answer to your question is Yes, use PayPal if you want to send a deposit. I always secure sales that way.

I've had members here go look at trailers for me with buyers checklist in hand. Paypal for deposits work. Be prepared for sellers remorse or cash in hand sales to take the deal out from under you. The phone calls give you some insight.
