Question about long term campgrounds

As a captive of the DC work scene, I'm finding it very difficult to break away on the weekends for some quality camping. One idea I'm considering is finding a campground located a decent distance away and leasing a site for a long term, either monthly or .... ?

Does anyone currently do this? What are the pros and cons? How do I find campgrounds that will do long term camping?

Many private campgrounds offer monthly rates.
The big pro in my mind is wanting to spend extended time in one area but still needing to travel to home at times of the month.
Not hauling the trailer back and forth, monthly rates are far better than nightly rates.
I took a monthly rate for May & June 200 miles from home will be going back for Sept. & Oct. when the rates are cheaper again.
I need to take the van to move the trailer but can use smaller cars or motorcycle when going back and forth.

I have friends who full-time in a 25' Bigfoot. They have purchased sites in 3 different long term RV Resorts, a part of their strategy to keep nightly expenses amortized out to within $10 to $15. They truly like each location (and their amenities) and spend considerable periods of time in each, as well as traveling to other places. The management arranges "short term" rentals while they are not occupying their spaces to offset their costs. Depending on what you are looking for, any RV Resort might be able to accommodate your plans.

have you tried camping at greenbelt national park?

close enough to pop in for a couple days of relaxing when ever you want.
its up by college park. we stay there for the cherry blossums in april. its like 12 miles or so from downtown dc

Another special DC local park is Smallwood State Park in MD, located on the Potomac, a nice small shaded park with a marina. We've seen deer, otter and eagles there as well collected shark teeth from the river.

You might want to take a look at Escapees RV Club. It's is for full-timers but they may have information that might concern long term site renting/leasing. A great group of people who are willing to share.

Several excellent ideas here. Thanks! I think I'll try a 2 month commitment at one of my fab parks and see if it works for me. I'll let you all know how it goes.

State & national parks usually have a 14 day limit. If you want to stay a month or more you probably will be better off at a private park. Also, state & national rarely have full hookups. Don't know how important that might be for you.

Just a thought but some campgrounds offer seasonal on site storage.
