Question on Compact II removal of cabinettes

I'm still looking at the compact II, but the length of the bed does not fit me. If I got one I would want to push the cabinet walls on each side down 4 to 6 inches min to lengthen the bed/seating area. I understand that the cabinets are what supports the roof, but didn't think a couple of inches would matter. My question is how the wood is attached to the fiberglass. Is is glassed in or attached some other way.

Thanks
Dan

I sleep across the 72" width of the bed area, my head below one window and my feet below the other window. The distance between the cushion at the front of my camper and the cabinetry is 55"

I think what you really want is a Compact Jr. They are already set up with a fore and aft king size bed.
I would worry about roof support.

Best

Brian, thanks for the images, that helped. I guess I didn't realize that on a Compact II it was set up to sleep sideways in the bed. I'm 6'2" and just isn't enough space. If the JR is setup to sleep length wise that would be the best best. I'm setting to go the Oregon NOG for Saturday and check one out myself, assuming one will be in attendance. Thanks for the quick replies.

Yo Danny. There's supposed to be a 1971 Trails West Campster at Spring NOG (Beverly Beach). It's my understanding, that brand has the sleeping arrangement like the Compact Jr.

I wonder if Bobbi has sold hers yet? http://www.fiberglassrv.com/forums/f...0-a-77417.html

Here's a photo of my Compact II completely gutted, so you can see there is a glassed in strip of wood along the midsection and a partial strip near the rear for bed support. Other than these strips, the cabinets were anchored through the roof and to the wood floor.

Good luck,
Fran

Donna, thanks for the lead.
Fran, the picture helps. Does the cabinets through bolt/screw to the roof?

A number of stainless steel screws with ss/rubber washers were screwed through the roof fiberglass into a 1 x 2 that served as the top frame for all the cabinets, and closets. A 1 x2 was screwed down into the wood floor to serve as the bottom framework. So you've got anchoring to the trailer at three points, the third being the glassed-in wood strip, midway up the side. I reused the original roof holes and did not add any new ones. I probably used silicone sealer at the hole to keep it water tight.

Then I used PL urethane adhesive to bond the closet/cabinet frame to the side wall. You might be able to see that in the attatched photo.

Our Compact II has no 1x2 at the top of the cabinetry like you show. How peculiar!
Our plywood cabinet walls are anchored by a few through screws into the edge. We do have the 1x2s at the base. There is quite a bit of difference in these trailers but its pretty subtle unless you know where to look
