Nah, those were inflated numbers. I like the site so much I had logged in 213 times.

I have seen unbelievable numbers on many similar forums. I think it is how the forum software disconnects users. It maybe how they log out, if they close their browser, if this have cookies installed and whether they ate anything at breakfast with a hole in it.

Perhaps there is some reset of the numbers at a predetermined time or there may some wacky formula that waits a certain number of hours before logging them off and changing the count.

What ever the case I think they are not believable.

Often, a majority of the reported "guests" are actually Search Engine Spiders crawling the forum to index the posts. You can expect this number to be large while the entire board gets re-indexed. This kind of thing will recur monthly. On one forum I ran I had to block several spiders because they were so aggressive that they slowed down performance of the server. Slurp (the Yahoo spider) was about the most aggressive.

Regards,

Matt

At the bottom of the forum page you can see a list of who's logged in. It also reflects folks browsing who are not registered. The numbers are real connections to the server. Some may be webcrawlers indexing pages, but many are 'lurkers'. You'd be surprised how many folks never register and just read. There are a lot of folks with trailer envy out there....
