Don Featherstone, creator of the famous plastic pink flamingos died earlier this week. He was actually a formally trained artist but needed to 'make a living'. The Smithsonian has a pair in the museum collection. According to the LA times, in the Disney film Gnomeo and Juliet, the 'wisecracking flamingo was named Featherstone as a nod to the creator'.
