Yes, I got an E-mail from fine woodworking today, announcing that Norm Abrams is ending the New Yankee Workshop. I get the impression that the whole show will end. It's been over 20 years and I'm sure he's burnt out. But, what a great show and wonderful contribution to the craft he has made. He will still be on "This Old House" though.

Peterh, from the looks of your cabinetry pictures, etc, I'm sure you will miss him. You do nice work.

I'll raise a freshly, sharpened chisel in his honor!

Thank you for the fine compliment, but my handiwork does not even come close.

I learned many things from Norm Abrams' The New Yankee Workshop and from Roy Underhill's The Woodwrights Shop. The two of them formed a pair of bookends, with fully modern power workshop techniques at one end of the spectra and classic pre-power, pioneer-era techniques at the other. Watching the two shows together (they came one after the other on PBS) one could learn a lot about what power tools you most want, what power tools you can easily do without, and how to use the tools you have to get the job done when you have a smaller workshop and modest means.

If you like Norm you may enjoy a younger generation wood worker at The Wood Whisperer. I find his Videos both informative and funny and the links to other members shop tours etc.. is a good resource. I particularily liked his video podcast on building a torsion box work top

For every new job, you NEED a new tool.

For years that's been my motto. I prefer to do all my own work and so with the 'savings' of not paying for labour I buy the right tool for the job.

Getting hard to find any new tools to buy though - though of course there is that Festool TS 55 panel saw
