Sorry to hear Roy. Two years ago I had to put my pooch of 10 years down just a little after Christmas. So hard to do, but everything was shutting down on him. Took me a long time to finally spread his ashes. We took him out to where we spread grandpas ashes. They can keep each other company. Still hurts to think about it.

Sorry for you loss. I have a irreplaceable 14 year old lab that has probably lived at long as she has due to good teeth and lack of exertion. I ask her every morning if she's still was us as she is laying there on the porch and she replies with a look that says to me "I am still breathing aren't I?"

The reason dog's only live for a short while is best explained by Sir Walter Scott

The misery of keeping a dog is his dying so soon. But, to be sure, if he lived for fifty years and then died, what would become of me?

Roy,
Sorry for you, Peggy and I will miss JR--how will we know if you are awake if JR is not outside in the AM?

so sorry to hear about JR's passing. Only us dog lovers can relate to your loss. Our furry friends are our unconditional loved ones. DOG is GOD spelled backwards for a reason. ;-) Again, sorry for your loss.

Time heals wounds, and I hope with time your pain is eased. I know the feeling, as we had to take our cat to the vet in June for the final time; she had cancer and couldn't keep anything down any more. She had outlived her prognosis by about 3 years already, though. What a cantankerous old queen she was, ruling the roost and bossing her humans. But a month later we have been given another cat and she is the sweetest, gentlest thing you ever met; she seems to think I'm the love of her life and is constantly on my lap, like a dog. Didn't think we would do this again so quickly, but it was the best thing we could have done. We're feeling mighty happy again with our new fur kid now. Hope you can make a new friend soon, too.

They become such a part of our lives it's so hard when they are gone, you have my sympathy. I know from experience that the smiles from the memories will always have a little pain of loss, but I hope that even while the pain is still fresh you can draw some comfort from the love you shared.

I was literally tearing up reading this thread, hardest moments of my youth may have been the loss of furry buddies. So glad to see a happy ending, that's one cute pup!!!! Hopefully take the edge off your loss.

I really look forward to enough time for a dog again at some point in my life. Not sure when that'll be, perhaps retirement! Hope it's sooner.
